Back home...in Denmark
To help me get over the fact that my 1150 RT (2004) was stolen yesterday, I'm looking around for a replacement.
I'm looking at 2006/7 1200 RT and for peoples opinions but only if they have ridden and maintained both :)

@Steptoe I know your preference is towards the 1150, is the 1200 a pita to maintain over the 1150 or has "more to go wrong"

I live in Denmark so its around the 2006/7 age of bike for the 1200, anything younger than that and I need to take our a 2nd mortgage (eg: a 10k used bike will set you back 28k here in Denmark - on account of the 180% tax they check on vechicles)

I thought that was unheard of .. so sorry to hear that.
The 1200 is ok, possibly expect niggly problems on the year of bike you’re looking at, but make sure any bike doesn’t need the clutch replacing in the near future, as it’s a very expensive job, all parts and labour will be more than £1000 .. good luck 👍

Cheers Neil, I know, biggest crime here up until this point was "a cat walked into dog fart"

Getting reports of "yoofs" seen riding it around locally, which is doing my head in. I can't be going out there scanning every street for it.

Can't believe they went for a good ole 1150 the bastards... Surely there was newer shinier around... 1200s are good bikes but the 1150 is a great "sum of it's parts" and proper DIY fix bike...

Cheers Wrigsby - it was on my drive - always said to my wife that it should be in a shed in the garden…..NOW she agrees! I didn’t know they were so easy to nick with the steering lock on & I guess they hot wired it somehow as the keys are in my home

Sorry to hear your R1150RT has been, I would be very annoyed if I lost mine.
 
Cheers Wrigsby - it was on my drive - always said to my wife that it should be in a shed in the garden…..NOW she agrees! I didn’t know they were so easy to nick with the steering lock on & I guess they hot wired it somehow as the keys are in my home

I leave my steering lock off as it’s no deterrent.,
Takes seconds to force it and to get it started, and it causes damage which is expensive and time consuming to repair.
They won’t be starting my bike as I’ve a secret cut out switch .. I know it won’t stop it being picked up chucked in a van, but at least it keeps it out of the feral scrotes hands .,

Good to know - I really had no idea - I also got a bit lazy over the 16 years my bike has been left in the driveway. I became too trusting - next bike will be stashed away in the garden somewhere behind a gate. As a mate said when I left the UK to come to Denmark “ great you are going to pastures new, but remember, there is shit in every field” !

The cut out switch is a good idea;; i also like the idea of there being just enough petrol for them to get started and a few yards down the rd so they have to abandon it in a very conspicuous place; that works better for cars if they cut out on a roundabout or summat;; even the coppers can't just leave em there so they will be in touch with you early.
 
Suggests a cut out on the fuel pump rather than the sparks?

I could see that working on a carbed vehicle with float bowls but not on injection?
 
I'm just surprised it was an old Rt they nicked... Round Aberdeen it's all e bikes n crossers and RTs are hard to fit down alleys but I suppose the panniers are handy for the drug runs...
You can imagine said scrotes pleepsin on about the notchy gearbox and the FI... My older bikes are left in the hope they are undesirable to nick ...

Nice idea but quite hard to achieve in practice if you use it regularly.

I had an R1200RT which was a good bike but I prefer my R1150RT. Might be worth considering getting another one if you can find a good one?

Thanks for the support - yes I agree it’s not like it’s a flashy bike or worth a ton of money - it’s a really odd bike to nick and pretty unheroic bike !
 
I had an R1200RT which was a good bike but I prefer my R1150RT. Might be worth considering getting another one if you can find a good one?
I’m looking at the 1200 as it has a little more power right? Can you feel that difference? I miss the revvy nature of my old VFR but I want a decent riding position - also considering a triumph sprint 1050….

The 12 is a bit quicker in a boxer sort of way, just development really... Obviously the other bikes produce power in a different way so it's more what type of bike you want...
My take on it is do you want to stay with the anytime, anywhere road, luggage, comfort option of the RT but without power drama?
My ST11 have much of the best of both worlds bike you are looking for but they are all pretty old now and prone to a few more age related issues than RTs... My 1150/1200RTs had the edge on comfort but the ST11 engine is still a brilliant engine. I prefer that generation of v4 more than the ST13 or Crosstourer versions that went after...

Right now I need a commuter, and long distance bike - so all day comfort is key, the problem I had with my VFR 750 was that it became a challenge to ride it long distance. In Denmark, where I live, and in the other and Scandi countries there is a lot of shite weather and so weather protection is very important to me - else you get pissed off very quickly with being buffered around by wind. Good to hear that the RT’s stand the test if time - my 1150 was doing alright - bit they put way to much salt on the roads here in winter and that’s no great - but again the Tupperware helps!
 
Sounds like your still in for the RT... I've had 12s both Hexhead and LC and the were both "better" bikes but I'd have an 1150 first... Post COVID I bought a newer bike also very well regarded and half way round an 1800 mile week trip I wished i'd taken my old shonky RT instead... There's always "better" out there on paper...
 
Well fate played her hand today - Danish police called me to say that they have found the bike!
Side mirrors are off from the photos, and I can imagine the ignition barrel if buggered along with the steering lock. HOPEFULLY thats all - the bike had about 60km of fuel left in it and it really wasn't running well, backfiring constantly, so probably nicked for a laugh / joyride. Just want to give a big shout out to John Gemi for being such a decent bloke and refunding the money to me for a the perforemance chip I bought before the bike was nicked (which is now winging its way back to him) + thanks to the supporting words from everyone here. Again, this forum delivered!
