Givi Airflow Screen review

Givi A330 arrives from DK last week - great service, well within the 10 days promised for restocking. Thanks Cieran.
It's now fitted and has made a difference to the wind in my face but I am finding buffeting on the top & back of my helmet at 60+mph. I'm 5'11" and use a standard Sargent seat on the standard setting. I've tried most screen settings with little difference, reading through the thread I think I need to take the following action: Get & fit tobinators to give more adjustment (i.e. lay the screen back a bit further), fit winglets. If that fails ... start again! So, to those of you who have solved the problem - does this sound the right course of action?

Hiya Teejayef

I would try the winglets first, I posted earlier that I took the winglets off just to see what the screen was doing.... I put the wings back on as soon as I got home. They make a HUGE difference! Then try the Tobs.

I put Tobs on my setup just to see, and I found they did make it better but not by the same degree as the wings. I found the screen and the wings almost got it, the Tobs finished the job for me....

Definitely lay the screen back as far as you can, then mess around with the height of the top screen. Start low and try keep it as low as you can. For the two screens to work properly I think they need to collect as much air as possible, then the difference in the wind speed (the wind coming underneath is moving faster than the wind going over the top) smooths the air out, "Laminar Effect" I think is what is happening here. I am no aerodynamic or physics guy..... just read a lot about this before I spent my hard earned.

Once this was sorted for me, I found the difference in air pressure behind the screen and the air coming around and over the screen was too great. The screen and the wings worked too well! So I tried out the Tobs, to get a bit more air behind the screen which lowered the difference in air pressure and creates less buffeting.

Blah blah blah

Hope this helps, a little. Let us know how you get on.

Cheers

I put in my first post that after fitting the Air flo I didn't think you could get any better on the GS.... Well I was wrong... After reading a few of the posts here I decided to buy some Winglets. Fitted them last night and have made another quantum leap forward in my search for the ultimate quiet ride.

Must admit that when I fitted them I couldn't really see what difference they would make but, whatever it is it works. Didn't get a chance on the commute this morning to get up to serious motorway speeds but up to 70 mph all I can hear is the engine ticking away and tyre noise now.

To get the screen back as far as possible I cut off the two lugs on the screen adjustment assembly that stops the screen being lowered to the final position.

Test rode a 1300Gt the other day which is supposed to be a full blown tourer and in it's standard form the level of wind noise is waaay above my GS now.

Not sure the winglets add anything on the athstetics front but with the quirkiness of the GS looks you can just about get away with it without it looking too heath robinson:clap:clap

hi guys,

Here's a little update on my efforts eliminating the buffeting on my 2008GS.
As you could read earlier; i have winglets, tobs and the givi. As to now, i rode
around 1000km. with it and i'm fairly satisfied.

Right now; the setting which works best for me is the middle setting on the standard bmw adjustment rail and the givi in a very high position so i can just overlook the road. The tobs are in the lowest position (upright; creating a small air gap so to say) and there's a reason for that: if i try to lay the screen lower with the tobs, the screen will touch the winglets in many positions. This means that i had to work with the screen in a more upright position and work from there on.

I don't understand how you can lay your screen so low and not touching the winglets? On the other hand; i used this position for a couple of kilometers on the highway just to see what would happen: to my surprise; the wind is banging against my helmet so with my screen more upward would be the best position for me anyway.

Like i said; i'm fairly happy. The circumstances depend also a lot on climatological factors: if the air is gusty, you have more problems than on a windstill and sunny day but rest assured if you are still looking for a solution that the combination of the 3 parts is a HUGE step forward anyway; didn't wanna miss it for sure :thumb2

In 3 weeks i will drive to the Ukraine; costed me a lot of money for the preps allready: electrical tankbag with mounting system on the tankring, a harder saddle, the screen and all the fittings but it's worth it: i'm able to drive 700km's a day without hassle now.

Cheers,
Connick

I have been reading this thread with interest. I have NN H&W screen at the moment which is not too bad in calm weather, but when I was riding up the A12 on Sat into a northerly wind, the turbulence and booming defeated both apline and sponge ear plugs which made the journey tiring and tiresome. The question is, how good is the Givi airfow in windy conditions?

Cheers

For some reason UK firms just like to rip anyone off in any way they can!! A search on the net in EU or USA generally reveals a cheaper price delivered!

Dont tar all UK firms with the same brush. I work for one and offer exclusive discounts for the UKGSer forum members, I have helped out many of the chaps on here and gone out of my way and to great lengths to get them the best deals I can.

With regard to the postage to Northern Ireland thats out of my hands, all UK couriours class Northern Ireland as a premium service, same as all offshore islands and the top of scotland.

Lastly, you can possibly get them from Italy off ebay and save a few quid but what do you do if it goes wrong? If it turns up damaged or theres parts missing I can guarantee the company wont be concerned about your problems whereas a UK company can offer a comprehensive warranty backed up by Givi UK. You could even be stung with import duty and end up paying more!!

Feel free to agree or disagree but I prefer to spend my money in the UK where if things go wrong at least the company speak the same language!!

Cieran, If I post something to London for example from N.Ireland I am not charged a premium if I use Parcel Force. I have sold to a fellow member before and charged what the post office charged me. I hope you do not think I was directing my post at you, but recently some UK firms have been upping their prices to post to N.Ireland. I have used Chainspeed recently and he posted for free because the item was not in stock at time of order.
On a brighter note, I recieved my screen this afternnon and fitted it. I am only back in and I have to say it is EXCELLENT. I am fit to ride with visor up and I thank other members on here for posting their reviews. It was because of what I read that made me choose the GIVI. This is what the forum is really about.:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb

Just to clear up another matter, screen arrived undamaged, all parts enclosed and took 8 days to arrive from Italy after ordering. Price worked out at £115 and nothing else to pay which makes me a happy bunny.:aidan

Hiya Bounder

I have used this screen in all sorts of weather, including high gusty winds and found no probs..... with wings fitted too. If it gets bad enough I roll the screen up and pull on the throttle harder. No booming wind noise or turbulence.

Cheers

Thanks for that. I have cut down my original GS screen which great for this hot weather, however I'm pretty well sold on the Givi and wings, which on the strength of the posts of this thread is doing a great job, and I will be ordering one :thumb2

I was wondering how the screen compares to the original GSA screen in terms of size and looks. I have an 08 GSA with TT spoiler, but not really happy with that setup. Maybe the Airflow is the answer.
Any specific experiences and/or pics for a GSA?

My screen has arrived from Italy - £109 (I made an offer which was accepted) delivered on the estimated day and in good order.
Fitted with my existing tobs - easy once I realised that the black bits that form the height adjusters (original equipment) have L and R on them. :blast

Went for a ride and have left the settings as they happened to end up with the installation - very good. I have done about 120 miles and in some winds at various speeds and I am impressed.

The wind noise has gone and is replaced by the sound of the engine, exhaust and road noise. I can now hear my ipod at silly speeds :D

One observation - at speed you can detect a little surging and I am not surprised as the screen is shifting large volumes of air and acting like a sail. I can live with that. And another thing - the screen fouls with the hand guards on full lock - a shame but I can live with that as well.

All in all 5 stars :clap

PS - and all this from someone who has never worried about wind protection in 44 years of motorcycling......

Just a quick update after a 400 mile trip in windy conditions. On the way out the wind was mostly front-on. Screen was still good but the bike (fully loaded) was battered about a bit. On the return journey the wind was mostly behind and the screen was good at silly speeds. :) Early on I noted that there was an increase in fuel consumption - not a bad price to pay for the improvement, though. One downside is that the screen now fouls with the handguards on full lock.:blast

OC, what setting do you have your Tob's on? I have mine second from the bottom and the hand guards don't hit the screen. Close, but probably ~8-10 mm of separation.

I have mine about 4 from the bottom. I will try your setting but I was wondering if the tobs are actually necessary with the amount of adjustment on the screen itself.

Moving the Tobs from the lowest position to the second-from-the-lowest made all the difference for me. I had turbulence thrumming on the top of my helmet prior that. I also have the stock screen adjusters set to their lowest settings and use only the sliding upper screen of the Givi to moderate air flow.

For those thinking about this screen you might look into substituting Tobinators with the Wunderlich Vario Screen Savers. Here's a link for use with 08+. They're cheaper than the Tobs, but should provide about the same amount of adjustment as the two lower positions on the Tobs.

Along with BMW winglets I think I may have the closest thing to an RT-like cockpit without resorting to something ridiculous. It's adjustable, reasonably attractive, works at triple digit speeds and has managed to survive one 0 speed tip over. I LIKE it!
