Would like to know if any one has tried to install E-41 side cases and a e-52 on the GS.

I have a blackbird and would'nt mind using these cases.
I know that brackets are required. Will th E-41 cases clear on the LHS due to the high pipe?

Does the E-41 look good on the GS or is it way to wide?
Also does anyone have pics of the GIVI bracket with a top case. Do they interfere with the BMW OEM side cases?

I don't want to buy the GIVI brackets and then find out that the installation looks like Sh---.

Also does the addition of a top box make it top heavy. I dont plan on loading it . It will be very light stuff

Opinions welcome.

BTW great site ;)

Thank Rick :)

E52

Not going to help too much, but i (and others here) have the E52 as a top box. It's great! But i don't have a complete GIVI ensemble as i have the B*W panniers, so i can't comment on the way it would all look or interfere with other requirements. Mine works well and i haven't had any handling/loading issues yet.

The E41 probably wouldn't be much (if any) wider than my B*W cases with global lids on. I suspect the left-hand side would be an issue with the Givi box due to the exhaust (unless the mounting bracket overhangs further to compensate). You can get exhaust lowering kits though that might solve that problem.

Might have managed to attach a picture (of LOVELY yellow bike) but not sure that it'll help much. Looks great though (but only to me - but i can live with that, as it's my bike :D ),

Thanks for the pic johnny, It looks good with a givi top box. Is the plate from GIVI similar to the top plate from the Wing rack?

From the picture it looks your lights seem to work ! Does the plate have the quick disconnect switch?

Did you have to do any drilling in order to adapt the givi plate?

Sorry for all theses questions! :(

Rick:D

To answer two questions:-

Yes the Givi E41 boxes will fit without any hassle at all, but is a bit wider than the BMW boxes.

Yes the Givi mounting plate has a spring loaded two pin connector to enable ease of removing top box. Just fitted mine and wiring them up is a piece of pi55. Just follow the OE cable into the back of the rear light cluster. Take the lense off and pull the reflector out, then simply fit piggy back connector onto yer leads and away you go.

I am currently making a small gadget/gizzo so that the brake lights are on at 50% less than normal brightness with the side lights and then full brightness when the brakes are applied.

Watch this space.....coz it may not work yet:mad:

Pretty much everything that "BTBR" said. Fitting is dead easy with no modifications necessary (other than the wiring obviously). I have additional side/tail lights just above and to the side of the main tail light so i have wired the E52 lights up as rear fog lights. I may yet wire them up so that i can switch between either fog or high level brake lights.

The quick disconnect switch is a real pain in the a*se. The pins corrode quickly and one of the spring loaded contacts doesn't return to normal position. Consequently the lights only work if i keep faffing around with the contacts. I don't usually take the top box off, so i'll probably just wire them in 'permanently' with spade connectors so that i can disconnect if i have to.

Other than that, the box is brilliant. Two full face helmets, or my laptop, or about 50 pairs of my girlfriends shoes ("i need them all" [her not me - although she does have same size feet as me] - for one weekend??????).

Have also got the backrest on mine, which has helped to reduce the amount of whingeing i get from my Bird. Not silenced her yet as she's still complaining about being cold. Despite having a B*W heated waistcoat on. Needless to say in female logic she only had it on the low setting as "the high one was too hot" and might make her sweat which would make her colder. What ??????? I just nod understandingly. Have now been instructed to buy her heated socks, leggings, gloves and a helmet. Alternatively i could just get her to take the car.

Johnie,

Is the GIVI top plate the same as the on the bird. The reason I'm asking is that I would use the top plate from the wingrack on the GS I would dismantle the rest of the wingrack. I plan to keep the bird strickly stock.

thanks for the help

Rick

Top Plate

Couldn't tell you whether they're the same or not. I can take a pic and post it on the board for you if that helps - but my camera's miles away so it'll have to be after the New Year. I expect someone else can oblige quite readily though?????

My top plate just attaches direct to the existing B*W aluminium rack but with the addition of a couple of supplementary brackets to support the overhang of the E52.

Have no idea if this helps or confuses (probably the latter), but i'm sure better answers will be forth-coming shortly,

Thanks for the info.

I found a picture of the e189 rack from Givi. Look simple enough.
I guess you loose the rear grab handle

Rick:)

Lose the grab handle

Yes you do. But my Bird says you don't need it as it's like a throne (not a porcelain one) plus there's the grab strap between the two seats
