Are these easily fitted to a GS Original rack? Just need to get a top box attached to the bike untill next year when I buy a pannier set to go to Europe. I already have a universal plate which came off my wifes Freewind.

It's not just a matter of bolting a universal top-plate to the GS' rack. As you can see, the pukka Givi kit has a couple of support arms as well. To fit these you need to take a dremel to the rear of the bike.

Mines just a flat universal plate with no arms does that make a difference?

You need the special GS version with the support arms anything else might not be up to the load you are going to put on it. BTW the Givi rack & support arms don't require you to take a dremel to the bike (the BMW racjk does that).
The special Givi rack isn't without its faults, the bolts on the support arm have sheared on mine and the plate bends slightly when fitted. A search on here will show you what I mean.

You probably could fit the universal plate by drilling some 6mm bolt holes in the plastic BMW rack/grab rail thing. The weak link is going to be the plastic BMW rack/grab rail thing. Probably ok for light loads and legal speeds.

Can always sell stuff on again so why not buy the official Givi rack?

Yes its perfectly fine you don't need the extra arms - I've had a universal plate on mine for two years. I drilled holes in the rack and had the plate bolted on with 6 M6 allen bolts. I carried plenty of weight in it and my girlfriend always lent against it.

I had an E450 box and universal plate for £75 plus delivery from a fleaBay shop (sold it now though)

I think you will find that givi don't do this fitting kit any more, the one they do now you have to take off the bmw rack, and fit a givi rack in it's place, there are no supporting arms as these are not needed.
I think the top box looks better sitting that much lower.

The top box looks better, but there seems to be a small furry creature asleep on your seat?
