Gordo's Croatia 09 Trip Report

15 July:
So of the 9 bikes that made it to Split and 11 peeps:
moi, Chubs, Stevo and Haley, Charlie and Ruth, Major
Gadjet, Fuddy, Casperfelix, GSEddie, TT Jim it was time
to pack up and move north. 2 groups: one going to Zagreb
via Plitvic national park and the other via Bosnia.

The morning after look: The waiter had primed us with
shuttle fuel the night before:

Now this Japanese man had thought he'd not only seen
all the gadgets in the world but probably invented them....
until he casts his eye over MGs GS

Had to buy the green card insurance at the border.
Attempted to haggle the EU10 with the insurance guy
whilst Stevo was thinking ‘just pay the guy his money,
Gordo’

Croatian - Bosnain border

Time for a coffee stop. Stevo and Hailey's keen eyesight
caught a BMW logo down this road...basically it was a
BMW cafe....perhaps more for cars but we took advantage.
Owner seemed chuffed as he gave us loads of badges
from his 'chapter'....... mmmm , still not sure what to do
with them !!

Clearly, Stevo and H. couldn't wait any longer to celebrate
their anniversay .... the kit was coming off by the shed load.
Thing was....I share the same date as them.....what was
I going to do........ah yes, they gave me some girlie bar beer
mats when we got to Prague !
(bugger, they're still in my tent)

Through the border and back into Croatia. Onto the
motorway and up to Zagreb camping. Not as long
as a day that was planned as part of the Bosnian
route we cut out so give us time to play with.

Zagreb camping: a bit strange.....all on a motorway service station.
Canny enough though:

Charlie and Ruth checking us out before returning to their
luxurious service station motel.

16th July:

Zagreb to Vienna
All managed to leave as a group and hacked the planned
route to take advantage of non-motorways, although
we did nip on just to make some initial ground. At the
end of the slip road there was a pay point to catch one
of the tossers out. One of the lanes said ‘Card’ (as in
credit card) but Fuddy was clearly mesmerised by it
and it absorbed him. Maybe he thought it was giving
out free money or a place where he could rest for a
while but either way, he was suckered into it. Pushing
his bike back he came out of the cashless society
into the ‘cash is king’ que.
Getting near the border we thought it would be a good
opportunity to get rid of any Croat money we had.
The local OMV fuel stop had never sold so many
Magnum Classics with double choc chip icecreams.
I’m sure I saw one tosser stuffing 3 into his pannier
for later that day.
So into Hungary and as I was leading I felt the group
had to see some of the back streets of Lentil …. they
all thought I was ‘recalculating’ but no …. culture is
an important part of such a trip. I also thought they
better see and experience some of the deepest
craters this side of the Urinal Cosmos. I could feel
the daggers in my back … especially those carrying
passengers. It was a bit bouncy for a while.

Into Hungary from Slovenia
