Last week was nice and dry, so for the first couple of decent runs in my newly acquired Santiago, the suit wasn't tested at all. But, heavy rain forcast for tomorrow and a run down to Northampton planned.

How good is the waterproof system? Will I get wet with the liners in? Also, with the goretex having a cuff at the bottom, I have been tucking the liner into my boots with the outer over the top. Will this mean the water goes straight into my boots?

In my experience of separate goretex liners the answers would be: not very - probably - yes!

Gortex liners fail big time since everything on the outside [including everything in outside pockets] gets soaked. Basically everything bar yer undies and t-shirt gets wet and that assumes the liner works.

When it does rain Gortex make you feel so cold you feel wet any way and slipping damp Gortex on first thing in the morning is an experience I could do without.

One piece oversuit's the way to go. Okay, stopping to slip an oversuit on when the rain starts is a pain in the bum: but wearing Gortex full time will overheat a body thanks to it's excellent wind resistance.

I got a BMW one piece oversuit last year but never used it as I am too lazy to stop and put it on. My old leathers stood up well to heavy rain with just a bit of leakage at the arm vent zips when it really p***es down. Unfortunately, my frame has outgrown the leathers in certain areas and the adjustable waist band on the Santiago trousers is certainly welcome!

I have a meeting tomorrow so maybe wear the oversuit on the way down to avoid embarrassment and then test out the goretex on the way home.

After today's scientific test:

With oversuit on the way down, approx. 1.5 hours of fairly heavy rain. When I arrived my fleece collar and shirt collar were pretty wet and my gloves as well. I did have the suit tucked into the gloves as I don't like the wind up my arms. Since the oversuit sheds the rain immediately, I can only assume that the water beads and is blown up to the neck area and also runs down the arms.

Without oversuit on the way back, mostly light rain with 30 minutes of heavy rain at the end. Not quite as warm but completely dry inside the goretex liner, even though the outer was wet through in several places. Trouser bottoms good as well (liners outside boots!).

The liners do seem to work well, and in this instance better than with the oversuit added:thumb2
