Got my drive shaft back

Be very interested to hear what the reasons for such a failure could be. Did it always run smooth without vibration? Looks like something that would happen if the inner and outer were not perfectly alligned before filling with orange goo.

Big chunks of that have come unstuck from the sleeve and nothing is left on the shaft, so unless the shaft has got very hot then I'd take a guess that the bonding between the PU damper and the steel sleeve and shaft was at fault

Did you let Henderson know before you posted? - I wouldn't think he does the urethane himself and he may have recourse from his contractor.

Could have been worse - I had mine done locally in Adelaide by the only BMW guru left standing, and instead of a circlip the jerk welded the bearing caps in with a spot of Tig weld.

F-cked up the gearbox too, so it is a Legal job, but it takes 14 months to get a case to court and I have to keep the bits intact as evidence.

I will just buy the new rebuildable shaft from Motorworks or Boxer supplies, and fit a spare box I managed to find cheap on Ebay , but I will have to sell my VFR to pay for it all , and to replace the chicken shit bronze bushes I silly enough to put in the paralever.

Well after mutch arse scratcing i finally decided on some 2 pack polyeurathane resin and went for it

thats how it ended up looking after a bit of a clean up feckin stuff flowed nicely for the first bit then it started going off so i had to get it in there quite quickly resulting in

I asyet havent got in contact with henderson but will in due course. just need to get new back tyre & mot and its back on the road

Thank you I wanted to make a reusable jig out of steel but ive got no gas for my welder and the wire has gone a bit rusty so i made a jig with a bit of 4x2 some angle iron and a few other bits I lined it up using straight edges and eye with a few measurements and made sure it was clamped up solidly when i poured the PE. I also drew the air out of the middle bit with a syringe to make sure it was full. this stuff feels a little harder than the orange. wonder how long it will last ????????????

when you get a new genuine article the two triangular bits are not quite in line.
this is to allow for a bit of twist, when under load it should be straight.
I'm just wondering if this should be the case with urethane, I know it's harder than rubber but still??

If it all falls to pieces (again) perhaps next time you could weld the two parts together, get that ballanced, then fill the damper with the PU, then cut the welds off again, that should keep it straight and in balance.

I was also thinking of getting one of his repacedment trip meter buttons, anyone else interested to make it worth the postage?

when i got it back initially it was set straight. so I put it back that way. but i can see the point with a softer compound.

no not contacted them yet. but yes their comunications were good when i had the shaft done originally but their quoted turnaround tme was a bit out and i want to use my bike this summer i thought that this way i would have a greater chance of doing that

when he rebuilt mine they had just stopped doing them on exchange i think they were getting tomany with badly dammaged ends etc also iirc the urathane isnt done in house so they will be at the mercy of another firm the main reason i havent sent it back is that i dont want to send it to the states again. if it was a uk firm i would have taken it back myself already. I am quite happy with the machining work and their service (albeit slow with a few excuses) i think the weaping gearbox seal and hard 90mile (e/w) commute into london for 6 months (including the hottest part of summer) last year may have taken its toll along with being outside for the winter but yes i do have to contact them.
