Got Shaft Rot.... again WTF

Sure you have seen how he has fitted the gaitor at 1m 20 into video, does anything look different from yours

Exactly how I fitted mine. But I used white lithium grease to seal both rubber gaitors... at either end.

So I'm guessing mine is air tight now....
 
thats interesting... as the air in side warms up it will expand and push its way out... if its fully sealed when it cools it will suck on the rubbers... but can't be much?

If I was a betting man, I reckon the little dent in the final drive that I have circled in black in the picture below, should be some sort of vent to relieve pressure, and not be full of grease, it is obviously there for some reason, as the black lugs go left and right of it.

Yeah, that's there to let the water in :D

If you go by previous thoughts, that a thin bead of grease needs to be applied around the lip of the rubber boot... to allow water to run down that gully, then that little dent you've circled would still be redundant as it's on the outside of the seal. So it wouldn't vent anything.

I honestly think there isn't an answer, and BMW just expect it all to go rusty inside as you can't see it, so it's out of mind.

If I take it all apart and it's bone dry inside, I'll pursue this until I find the answer at how to mitigate the pressure changes inside the shaft drive.

If I take it all apart and it's like some sort of pool party in there again, I'll seriously consider drilling holes..... or set fire to it all :D

Has your gaitor got that metal spring clip inside..............

Interesting that none of the 'engineers' on here have jumped on this one with a smart answer?!

I fitted these to a crankcase on a classic bike ( 1/8" BSP) that I could net stop over pressurising and pissing oil everywhere.

Trouble is if you drill the casting then your screwed for a warranty claim later. I would drill a very small hole in the gaiter underneath, if there is room and glue in a rubber grommet (to stop the hole spreading).

Well here's an off the wall suggestion/observation, as the bike rides along with varying amounts of suspension travel I assume that the volume inside the swingarm is increasing/decreasing albeit slightly as the fd pivots up and down.

I would suggest a small hole in the bellows to test the theory (cheaper to replace than the swingarm casting if it doesn't work)

Me?, I'd be happy to pop a small clean hole into the lower part of the SA casting - but then my bike is an '05 with the SA on the original side.(And no rusty shaft IIRC)

Perhaps when they swapped sides they forgot to reposition the drain channel?

So I went into the garage today to check this rubber boot, and it was sucked hard onto the shaft. :blast

I got a flat head screwdriver and pulled back the rubber flap and pressed on the boot, where the notch is on the swingarm and.......

Swwwoooooooooooooooooshhhhhh

Air was sucked in, and the rubber boot inflated back to normal.

Must be a hell of a lot of pressure vacuum inside there :eek:

Anyways, that's how to release the pressure if you seal it all in :confused::rolleyes:

I'm a bit concerned of the impact this might be having on the final drive shaft seal?
