Hello All;
I've tried to search the site about this subject, but found nothing:
I'm looking to get GPS on my phone. As per hardware side it's easy, all one needs apart from the phone is a GPS receiver, preferably a bluetooth one; those are unexpensive and can be bought mfrom several places.
Now the problems; Software. If you have a smartphone, Symbian OS based, then you are ok; multiple software choices, download the maps into your device, and that's it.
Bad side, vast majority of phones are not symbian based.
If you otherwise (my case) have a JAVA based phone (p.e., mine is a sony ericsson W810i) then it appears (here my question) to be just online options; those of the kind "you ask for a map and it then downloads onto your phone" for whatever (copyright) the reasons, your phone is not allowed to keep those maps in cache, so each time you move or zoom is WAP/GPRS traffic that you are paying for.
This may be expensive enough if you are at home; but travelling in remote countryes it may be senselessly pricey...
All I want is just a device to show me the map with my position... and the phone has 4GB memory, so I think i can store quite a good map in there....
Does anybody know of a suitable software? I'm leaving for Syria in 3 weeks, and funny thing is you are not allowed to enter syria with a GPS.. but there is no problem about cell phones...
Thanks in advance mates....
