GPX - Good day for it, too…. London Triathlon avoidance in north east France / Calais region

Three hours to get from NW London to sitting in the Flexi+ lounge. The delay was not the contraflow for operation Brock on the M20, which flowed along fine at 50 mph. It was the congestion on the M25 clockwise at every major intersection junction.

But hey, here now and France awaits.

Enjoy whatever trip you're on. Hopefully having a fuss free cruise in your beautiful old car

First stop tomorrow will be to find some fuel.

The fuel gauge is simply advisory, in as much as it swings between full, half full, empty, to a quarter or three quarters full, at will. I haven’t yet got used to the range, but this weekend should sort it out. The tank capacity is 12 gallons / 54.6 litres. The car should return about 22 to 25 mpg, out of town and with the overdrive engaged. I’ll what is what by my return to NW London on Monday.

The steering is now much nicer, as the steering wheel now sits at a quarter to three, not at about ten-to-four as it was before. The work done on the steering box has sorted that out.

The car will be going in on my return, to have a little work done on the play in the throttle. In short, there is too large a gap between the top (unpressed) position of the throttle and the point where it’s opening the carburettors. It’s not until you try another car, that you realise it’s not truly right. It’s only really noticeable at low rev’s, where the throttle is pushed down further in its travel than it should be and is a bit annoying in slow moving traffic, as one gets the temptation to slip the clutch. Inevitably, it slows the acceleration too, as there is a lag. It’s fine though when cruising or accelerating from say 50 mph, as the throttle is past its ‘slack gap’. In short, there are some mountings, down at the rear of the engine that are worn, allowing some slack to enter into the great scheme of things.

Love those old stye clocks, set in a french polished dash

That was craftmanship , not led's and plastic :(

Loving the old AA badge on the badge bar, I have one in the cupboard that was my fathers and maybe one day ill have a suitable car to mount it on. I bet you cant find an AA Box anywhere these days.

The last owner bought the AA badge. They are numbered and, by nothing more than chance, the badge’s number was contemporaneous with the age of the car. In the glove box, there is an AA book of the same vintage, also bought by the last owner.

The last owner did’t know that the badge was numbered nor that the numbers are apparently age related. He simply bought it as he thought it looked ‘right’.

I’ll take the Goodwood Members’ bar badge off, as I am not a member. I’ll replace it with a Lloyd’s Motor Club badge.

The plan (such as it is) is to drive around the D roads, never much beyond 80 or so miles of Calais. It’ll be many of the roads I have used in the past for Wanders for members of UKGSer and to run in motorcycles.

I have just met a nice Belgian gentleman, who owns a racing Healey and has participated in the Spa 6-hour race, along with other similar Classic races, including the full length Nurburgring. He’s bought a house in Cap Gris Nez and will be moving over his two Morris Minor convertibles.

We have agreed to try to meet up at Spa in late September, as a friend of his is racing.
