After project Money Pit rode off into the sunset, I was left with this R100 monolever frame.

Options are:

1. Sell it - it’s in good nick and has a V5C

2. Build it

My typical man thinking was that my R80G/S could be damaged if I start to use it in earnest on the many green lanes round here and they seem to be holding their value.

What I need is something that can take a beating and not concern me if I drop it (likely) or scratch it (very likely)

Following some spring cleaning of the garage loft & spares stash and I have cobbled this together

It’s the last of the spares that came with the G/S project.

It comprises R100 monolever frame, G/S forks & yokes and a very rough chopped up subframe, R100GS bars and a few misc parts including a wiring harness and a slightly damaged G/S 3 stud final drive hub.

I think I’ve got a full (but rough) G/S exhaust system and an ST rear mudguard in the shed too.

I’ve also got an engine, gearbox and carbs, (earmarked for Money Pit when son passes A1 test) so there is potential to build something I can use ‘off road’ without worrying.

Sell or build ?

Build….
And keep us updated on progress on “project mucky money pit”

Ps: I have a g/s front wheel (and a ST one) that needs a new home…..

I think I’d like to take you up on that wheel/s offer 😎

I’ll drop you a message

Looking forward to this... a big fan of functional/utilitarian machines

Another root round in the tea chest that keeps on giving, yielded some crash bars and an 18” Akront wheel rim.

The left crash bar looks like it has fittings for a sidestand which is a bonus.

Just need to research what sidestand fits and see if I can track one down.

I have a good DR250 front wheel with brand new srandard size disk. I bought it to fit onto some RM125 forks. The forks turned out to be 43mm rather than 41mm. I believe a bearing swap will get you to a 17mm axel.

That’s very kind of you to offer but Bubb has original G/S & ST front wheels and he’s geographically quite close to me.

I travel south quite regularly, but if you can get OEM items I dont blame you, the DR wheel would need custom spacers and custom caliper mount.

So a bit more time this afternoon got the badly fabricated shortened subframe apart.

I can use another subframe as a template to effect a repair and return it to stock length.

Separating the subframe allowed me to mock up the single seat and rear carrier using the ST mudguard as a guide.

Fitted a Mono rear shock to check for clearance and offered up some G/S style headers / collector.

This indicates the left Mono exhaust bracket hanger needs to be mostly removed to allow a G/S silencer to fit.

Found a suitable sidestand and front spindle on eBay 🤞

Methinks your Union Jack is upside down? Just sayin' :augie
He is in distress..!
I have a front axel if you want it with the wheel…. And lower yoke too….and maybe a brake caliper….
As well as the head/barrels, rocker covers etc…..and some gs rider footpegs….
And probably some other bits ….

Maybe you should come over and I will dig out all the bits and you can see what you want/need.

I’m away now for a few days.

Will drop you a line when I’m back 😉

I’ll have to check that.

I took it down for the platinum jubilee and had it on the front of the house.

It’s quite possible I put it back incorrectly 🤔

One of the parts I have and would like to use, is a rather nice rear shock absorber.

IMG_4453.jpeg

It’s longer than stock (previous owner was 6’6) and a greater diameter.

The problem is, it’s intended for a monolever road bike so wouldn’t be compatible with a G/S final drive unit.

I had a closer look at my damaged ‘spare’ G/S drive unit and the place where monolever road bikes have a shock mounting, is blanked off.
A moment with a drill and I popped of the blanking piece to see what’s beneath.

IMG_4456.jpeg

It looks like the recess to take a shock absorber mount is there, though it doesn’t appear to have been tapped.

Looks like the shock mount is available as a separate part too 😎

Also had a look at the damaged G/S final drive casing. It looks to me like it has been dropped at some point and the outer edge of the casing has a flat spot. It doesn’t look much but it catches the wheel hub and makes a horrible noise as the wheel turns.

IMG_4455.jpeg

It’s in the 12 o’clock position in the photo.

I’ve got options:

1. Heat the case and try to correct the flat spot with a hammer and drift.

Order a monolever lower shock mount and tap the case to suit.

2. Strip the G/S drive unit completely and transplant everything into a road bike drive unit with a good case and a shock mount already fitted.

I do have a potential road bike donor drive unit and a spare G/S swingarm but that wouldn’t be compatible with the shock absorber so just weighing my options.

First thing is to give it a good clean.

Vertical:-The wider diagonal white stripe should be at the top.
Horizontal:-The wider diagonal white stripe should be in the top left corner.

I had to check as well, so much for being in the cub scouts.
