Hi Mick,

i may still have marked up Beds and Northants OS maps somewhere and there are no green lanes at all in Buck's if my memmory serves me right.
Most of the County Councils now close the lanes over the winter months to motor vehicles by way of TRO's. I think they used to open arond April time & close in Octoberish.
If you want to do a lot of Green Laning it may be worth joining the local TRF.

Cheers, Piggers

Hi Piggers , BamBam,

Thanks for the posts, while i own a GS 1200 Adventure i dont really want to take it green laning so i will use my DRZ 400 E for the real muddy stuff. Would be great to have some company! I live in Bedford and have heard northampton is the best and nearest place to green lane. Piggers if you have those OS maps with routes on them they would be great to borrow and i would buy new one and copy the routes onto them if you can find them.

I have completed the BMW off road courses but never been green laning before but the bike has full nobblies.

Maybe you could let us know if you find the maps?

Regards

Mick

The maps should be in the loft of my garage, but if they aren't I could mark the Northants routes from memory as I rode it so mant times !

There are quite a lot of "green lanes" in Hertfordshire if you check out the OS maps but Beds seems a bit sparse. I haven't investigated Northants or Bucks yet.

Not being very good with OS maps, are you saying the green lanes are marked on thease maps?

Yes - the 1:50,000 scale maps (Pink Landranger) have Byways marked as red crosses Example

and UCRs marked as red dots on white "road" Example

BTW - I found these by finding Bedford, selecting 1:25000 scale and then just headed south :)

Edit: Another Example

Hi Clive,

Thanks for the info, ill buy a map and work it out. But just a few questions:-
Is a byway a green lane? Whats a UCR? Is multimap better than an OS map?

Mick

OS is a paper map made by ordnance survey which multimap uses under licence.
green lane is slang for byway: UCR is Unclassified County Road.
Have a look at Memory-map to load up on the laptop or pc you can then load routes on to a GPS.
