Hi, anyone stayed in Grenoble this year ? I have rooms booked in Kyriad Grenoble Centre in July, budget hotel so not expecting much as using as a base to get out into the surrounding areas. Any 'must do' appreciated, thanks' , Mark

Grenoble is quite nice in the centre. A mix of locals, tourists and students. I have stayed there a few times including my very first overseas tour in 1995
Like us, your hotel is quite far out but very close to a tram station. When we were there they were free to use after 6pm and ran late.
It can be a bit grim for traffic.
Great roads and some really good loops are possible. Best one is over to La Grave, hop over the Galibier/Telegraphe pass and then return via the Croix de la Fer.

Thanks for the tips, looking at the options for days out, looking forward to experiencing these................... and getting lost in Grenoble on a day off !

Three ride outs, a clockwise and anti-clockwise around the vercors, and a little run out to the ALps, they all start / end at Rencurel, but you can tweak to suit easily, roughly what Wessie said I think...

It is a long day out from Rencurel, not much time for flower pressing, but covers a good selection of Alpine passes, starting / ending in Grenoble would shorten it quite a bit.... but i'd still rather stay in Marronier

We are travelling back North upto Reims via Route Napolean, really looking forward to that.
Presumably you're heading much further south than Grenoble then? Route Napolean runs from Grenoble SOUTH towards Grasse/Cannes.

You’re probably already aware that Grenoble is a Crit Air designated area, but just thought I’d mention it.

@Rasher thank you, appreciated. Just planning for tomorrow.
Might trim your Alps route a bit to shoryen the day, the clockwise route looks fun.
Weather keeping good so far

Hopefully, we want to get in as much as possible while we are here.

I think they've done away with that notion

Edit...not quite...

'While the French National Assembly has voted to end low-emission zones (ZFEs), the Crit'Air system is not yet finished. The vote to abolish ZFEs is not yet final and still faces legal and political hurdles according to The Local France. Until the process is complete and new legislation is enacted, Crit'Air stickers remain necessary for driving within ZFEs. '

Then you’d thunk rong.

Edit: Aha, I see you’ve rethunk.

Phew, the Grenoble bound fellow might have believed everything he’d read on the internet. That though still leaves him reliant on the “But, my mate says….” defence.

Crit’Air is still in place and, as said, has a number of political hoops to jump through before it’s finished. It seems to me that the main reason for ending it is the lack of interest on the part of most of the big towns to actually enforce it. I drive through Marseille often and have never seen a sign to tell me I’m in a ZFE (the satnav says I am in one) and also notice that there is barely a French car displaying a Crit’Air sticker - I may be hard of seeing but I do see endless signs all over the place telling me that I’m entering/leaving a snow chain zone! The towns along the coast are pretty much ignoring the ZFE but Cannes and Antibes are encouraging scooters with large parking areas for ‘motos’ whereas Nice has large parking areas exclusively for EVs most of which remain empty, much to the frustration of the ‘ordinary’ car drivers.

warning , last week , the N85 was closed from 2100 to 0400 .
only a problem if you are camping past the roadworks ( which i was )
there were, NO, deviation signs in place , apart from 1 pointing at the bridge.
but in the morning there was some nice new tarmac on bits of the road !

Yeah, just keep playing, I think the Alps day is not too bad from Grenoble base, I have quickly done a copy with start and end point in Grenoble and shortened it slightly, but it still has some epic passes and a good taste of the French alps.

Depending on how fast you ride i'd say 5:00 - 6:00 in the saddle, me and Mrs always average low 30's MPH in the mountains, that's "moving average" from nav / bike computer, and theres a couple of faster main road sections here so i'd guess a mid 30s average for this one, leaving plenty of time to stop for refreshments and pictures etc.

And even shorter one, but misses out the "big one" (Galibier)

This gives a really easy 4 hour ride.

I just copy a route in MRA, then start dragging the waypoints about to create alternative route, sometimes I do this several times untl I have 3 or 4 options for a day out, and then choose the one I want on the day as mood / weather takes us.
