Kent - the nice bit
I recently got my 2003 1150GS back after an accident in May. I have done a 1000 miles on it since but slowly felt that I had a faint grinding noise emanating in the area by the clutch slave cylinder /drive shaft joint area. The grinding noise only occured when at low revs (approx 2200 rpm) with the throttle slightly open eg: 60mph in 6th. The grinding sensation went away if I either increased revs or throttled off. My clutch and gears are/were fine.

Then on the way to work on Friday, I moved off in 1st and the noise became louder all of a sudden, which was rhythmic and got louder the faster I went. Luckily, this happened about 200 yds from work, I stopped and pushed it - (got a bit sweaty there!)

The bike's been recovered to a dealer and I am anxious about the news, before they hit me with the worst, can anyone shed light on what they think it is?

As a clue, when I had my accident, I got hit by a car changing lane - who hit the left side of my rear wheel at approx 20mph - would that have anything to do with it?

Help?

Could be the U/J on the shaft has failed - they usually make a racket just before finally breaking. Or possibly something as simple as the shaft has become detached from the output shaft. Had a couple of these in the past after bikes being hit up the arse.

Possibly be prepared to be quoted for a swingarm replacement :augie as well as a new shaft if a main dealer is doing the work -

Shame, i've a perfect shaft and swingarm sitting on the shelf.

Adam, it could be a whole number of things, but the first areas i would check would be;

1, Run out in the rear wheel (buckle)
2, Rear brake catching
3, Final drive output bearing (sticky thread on how to check this)

Hope this helps
Andy

Thanks Guys, :thumb

Lets hope I dont get stung by Coopers @ Tunbridge Wells for every conceivable part that may probably not need replacing. :forry

My fingers are crossed.:aidan

Hi Adam, did you manage to bottom the grinding, mines just started, exactly as you described, no increase in noise as yet though.

Cheers
