Hi was wondering what sort of oil to put in the shaft on my 1100 gs and how much also think i may need a new throttle cable are they much chew to fit and where the best place to get one.Cheers:beerjug:

I've just put swepco in the diff and gearbox. If you've not heard of it; its popular in the US with Porsche racers. They reckon it extends the life of hard pressed gears and improves the change.

I had some left so giving it a try in the GS. Will let you know. Its a 80/90 Synth but sticks to gears like tate & Lyle

GL5 gear oil - £9.99 from halfrauds enough to do both the gear box and final drive.

I do them both at the same time... 15 minute job.

Thanks will get to halfrauds how much oil will they take?:thumb2

In theory you need 1L + 30ml.

In practice I have found 1L to be enough... but then I change this a little more frequently than is recommended (6K) - and do it COLD - BEFORE I take the bike for a ride to warm up for the engine oil/filter change.
The oil coming out looks exactly the same as the oil going in. I have never encountered the 'stink' that some owners mention from the FD oil.

Just for clarification. You do know that the shaft runs dry on the 1100? Only the gearbox and diff need oil.

Posts like THIS are truly what this site is all about !!

I love it when tossers get anal about terminology!! and while trying to be clever still get it WRONG!!

Its not a 'diff' you narner - it's the 'final drive' - According to BMW and that nice Mr Haynes. (and probably that snotty Miss Clymer)

if some owners want to call it the 'shaft' then so what? - there is only one way to get oil into it and its practically impossoble to overfill.. so who cares???

If you are going to attempt to clarify - then please do it correctly and try NOT to add confusion.

(as a motorcycle only has ONE rear wheel - it cannot have a differential

omg now I'M being anal... it's catching...

Apologies. Johnny 46 has a low post count - I just thought he may have been refering to the drive shaft (which is why I quoted his post). I called it a diff as others had called it that and it's a good description of the "round bit" at the end.

When I bought my 100GS I was suprised the shaft ran dry (after owning two G/Ss) and only realised when I came to change it's oil.:blast
