Well John, been watching this post for some time with humour and pity for some.

How right you are and well said sir, if you are ever in my 'neck of the woods' give me a shout ... I think we could enjoy a good run out on the bikes sometime :beerjug:

Think what you like, friend, but please, don't act like a child thats had his doddy taken away! Now I'm bored, and away to play with the adults.
Now doubt you will reply with more insults, but I won't be reading them this time.....

Well that was quite unjustified, and pretty childish. If you choose to go down this route instead of debating the facts, then it is probably better that you don't read any more.

Your central point was wrong, that the GS will pull better out of a corner than the other bikes mentioned. You are overemphasising the benefit of the torque peak being lower. The GS is slower in-gear than the other bikes. The fact that the torque peak is a little lower in the rev range simply does not overcome the engine's relative lack of pulling power.

Anyone who rides a bike correctly will be leaving the bend close to the torque peak anyway (as I am sure you know full well). Why would they ride it in the right gear on the GS, but the wrong gear on the others?

Does it justify what was said by some ignoramous, who felt I was making wild and non factual claims, and went to the extent of calling me an idiot, WTF was that all about. None of the questions I asked, him, her, it were ever answered at all. I would like to know were his basis in fact is coming from. My theory is not a theory, it is the explaination givien to me, explaining Torque , by a mechanic friend, thats all..

Well your mechanic friend was wrong, or, just as likely, you misunderstood his/her/its explanation.

As others have pointed out, the GS is slower in-gear than the other bikes. The key point that you made was incorrect. Your desire to stick to it in the face of the facts or change the subject was the reason that exasperation came in to the replies.

I suspect that you don't perhaps understand torque, horsepower, gearing, and acceleration, and how they fit together. If you do, you are doing a poor job of putting it down on the page.

Ok you're right :thumb

It is probably worth repeating that I still think that the GS is the best bike available for what I want, at any price, but I just wish it had a bit more power.

As I said on another thread a while back, I even feel the lack of power on my ride in to work across London. More power would not make me appreciably faster, but I woudl enjoy it. I like the feeling of being fired from a cannon that you get on a big capacity jap multi, and I miss it on the BMW.

Much as I love the bike, I think I would love it even more with another 30bhp and 20 lbft.

New GS owner here - it's not a point of whats faster etc.

Bought the GS because the test ride surprised me on how good it is. Living in the real world it's fast enough for 99.9% of situations - and I got it to go places on.

I've still got a sports bike but that's a toy for when I'm in the mood.....

Back to the original question - give it some time and hopefully you'll like and if not - well sell it and try something else. Each to their own..... even Harley owners (but you'll never catch me on one ;) )

do miss the xtra power of hyper sportsbikes and the pose value of a sportsbike with LOUD aftermarket cans and been assimilated into "the brotherhood" :( -having said that the gs is a cracking all round bike that you cant knock and the the bm brotherhood are a nice bunch of blokes. :beerjug:

PS gs may be greater with r1200s power -122bhp i think?

The R 1200GS (2005) is my first BMW, having been used to Jap bikes. I have only had the bike for 3 weeks and feel a little dissapointed in the performance.....it doesn't seem to have much of a power band...the revs increase and the bike makes more noise, but it doesn't really move forward that quickly. I wasn't expecting superbike performance, but maybe a little more than it currently has.
Are there any performance mods avaliable...ie. chips or pipes that anyone can suggest ? If so where is the best place to get them.

:rob I've an idea, wait for a wrecked R1200s and fit the bits that make this a more powerful beast.

hi minkyhead i only posted my reply because i would imagine there are a quite a few bm converts who have come from sportsbikes and still do hanker for the pose and power of a sports bike along with the obligatory loud cans, dubble bubble, small number plate etc etc, however some of us i would imagine me and my two 1200gs mates anywaystill like to participate in sportsbike stuff ie dump the standard exhaust for some extra noise and power ie remus system (it does sound naff with standard system) smaller number plate, etc and im sorry if noise is a dirty word in some bm circles. :D
