I have the optimate 4 and at the beginning I was using it through the din port, making sure that the charger itself was setup for canbus charging.
The problem I foudn with it is that the charger will "wake up" the bike to ask the canbus for battery status and then determine if it should charge or not, which is all well and good but that meant that it'll turn my navigation device on for a few seconds while it was doing the checks.
I opted to revert back to the good old direct to battery SAE plug. As easy as using the DIN port but without the hassle of the canbus. I only plug it if I don't use the bike for longer than 1 week or if the temps drop but I also don't leave it connected all the time.
Haven't had a single issue thus far (knock on wood) even with the lithium battery.
