GS 1300 battery charging with Optimate

I have the optimate 4 and at the beginning I was using it through the din port, making sure that the charger itself was setup for canbus charging.

The problem I foudn with it is that the charger will "wake up" the bike to ask the canbus for battery status and then determine if it should charge or not, which is all well and good but that meant that it'll turn my navigation device on for a few seconds while it was doing the checks.

I opted to revert back to the good old direct to battery SAE plug. As easy as using the DIN port but without the hassle of the canbus. I only plug it if I don't use the bike for longer than 1 week or if the temps drop but I also don't leave it connected all the time.

Haven't had a single issue thus far (knock on wood) even with the lithium battery.

The charger waking the sat nav up isn't a problem on mine as it just turns itself off again after a minute or so.

I remove my sat nav after every ride

Interesting the comments about sat nav as I have often popped into the garage to find the sat nav has switched itself on. Often noticing this on several occasions I had decided to always remove the Nav 6.

If you charge the battery on a 1300 using the din socket with a smart charger you must let the bike "Go to sleep" first. It takes about 30 seconds.

The GM module controls that socket. And it can turn it on and off at will depending on what hormonal cycle your software is currently on.

If you cycle the ignition whilst it's charging, it can also play havoc.

I recommend to my customers that they put in a direct to battery extension (aka Optimate lead) and leave the DIN socket for accessories.

Different electricity, isn’t it.
But I think we’ll pull through 🤣
It’s electrickery for riding on the left of the road, as opposed to the electrickery designed for bikes that ride on the right ( incorrect) side of the road.
Simples.
