Mine "used to" be like that-difficult to engage first gear, mine also "used to" whine a little in fourth gear under light throttle from about 2500rpm onwards:rolleyes: the whine got progressively louder and at the second time of complaining Rydale changed the gearbox:D
Whilst my bike was in for surgery I used their Adventure demo bike as a loaner, fist thing I noticed was the improved shift quality and the ease with which first gear engaged from a standstill-it really brought home how shit my gearbox was
I'm happy to say the "new" gearbox has all the qualities of the demo bike I used, quiet, easy and positive shift quality (all things are relative this is a BWM box!)
Don't know if there have been any revisions to the gearbox innards between 02 and 04 but this is like chalk and cheese:D
If you're not happy ride another Adv (demo bike or a mate's) and compare,if you're not happy-complain,it's under warranty;)
I'm told changing to fully synthetic oil in the gearbox & final drive improves shift quality, could be worth a try:confused:

My new (800mls) Adv does this when cold but when warmed up it goes in every time. I just engage/disengage the clutch while pushing down gently, not an issue IMO.

My previous bike an Aprilia Futura did this as well, in fact it would not engage 1st at all when cold for the first 2k mls. You will find that Aprilia owners develop a knack of rolling to a stop whilst knocking the bike into neutral for lights and stuff.

thanks guys - yup i do find that if i slightly move the beast to and fro it helps engage first - thanks specially to redrooster for the techie stuff - makes sense - thanks again
