Got ADV tank off the fleaBay.

Already proved the typical 1150s poor build quality - rusting from the bottom :augie Got it sorted with lot of my hand work invested on working with silly shaped surfaces, primed and repainted it.

Now the question. I thought the tank is the same as 1100/1150 stock tank, but it turns out the ADV tank has a (damned) crosspipe, with two 6mm 90-degree turning metal pipes coming off from each tank lobe to be connected with a flexible pipe. How is the best way to disconnect it, w/o pissing fuel everywhere on removing/installing the tank?

Use a separate Quick-Disconnect for the crosspipe? (£££?) Anything else?

The original 1150 Adventure uses a Q/R Release on the cross pipe however I have always found the 3 connectors down on the right hand side of the tank a PITA to push back together so it may be worth looking at still using Q/R fittings but moving them down and back very slightly and still keeping them under the side cover?

The standard BMW plastic quick connector on the balance pipe broke when I first tried to remove it so I have replaced it with a pair of 6mm 'Omega' plated brass QD connectors with 'Viton' O rings on each side.

That means that the main pipe doesn't have to be fiddled out from under the alternator each time the tank is removed (the Omega connectors are larger than the plastic ones and don't pass under the alternator easily).

This required:

Two 'Bodies' - part No. FT-LCD170-04-VITON.
Two 'Insert Elbows' - part No. FT-LCD230-04-VITON.

Total cost, including carriage, = £57.81.

Not cheap, but gives peace of mind when travelling abroad !

I have also used Omega 8mm plated brass QD couplers (with Viton O rings) on the high pressure fuel lines for the same reason.

This requires:

Two 'Bodies' - part No. FT-LCD170-05-VITON
Two 'Inserts' - part No. FT-LCD220-05-VITON

Cost, including carriage, was £60.04.

Available from . . http://www.omega.co.uk/

I temporarily used a couple of nylon right-angled fuel connectors but that was a pain as they had to be clamped off whilst being undone. Then I had to drain the tank before removal.

My bike is a 2004 1150 GS Adventure.

Hope this helps.

Bob.

I'm amazed at what lengths people go to too make things as complicated as they possibly can, and why not chuck some money at it while we're there. :augie:D .

Apart from being a little stiff I cant see what is wrong with the OEM connectors.

Mines been to peices loads of times and always reconnected correctly.

Try and find a scrapper and get one from there, will probably be < £5. :oonyack

Use the standard connectors all round.

Fit the two on the right, behind the black plastic panel in opposite directions so that they cannot be connected wrong

male-female
female-male

Fit an additional 90 degree connector to the left hand end of the crossover pipe, means that you never need to remove it or push it through back over the top of the engine.

Can't access Smugmug at present, do a search, plenty of info about.

GS tanks

Do leave a bit of slack under the tank, I cut mine off short and it's a real pian trying to get the q.d. connectors undone, amwsmall loop of pipe under the tyank makes life so much easier.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'll try to come up with the solution based on your mistakes and experiences then.

Cheers, Margus :beerjug:

I'm pissed off from plastic connectors that get farked after few years coz of petrol making them to change shape, mostly expanding and one moment they just don't work anymore.

Ordered one of these, metal connectors, plug with 90 degree turn:

Both ends should be valved, so I only need one kit. Less is more. I'll let you know how it works if I get 'em.
