GS dodgy sidestand?

for heaven's sakes , park in gear. Thats a very basic motorcycling skill.

if you can't learn to park in gear , how do you learn to do the other hard stuff ?

Exactly.

Roll it out of the garage, stop where needed, into 1st, push forward until resistance, stand down.
Same procedure when parking up.

My GS on the way back from work in Scotland yesterday, parked on an incline, not rolling off it's stand :)

Exactly - anyone who doesn't put it in gear is asking for trouble

Same with cars - always park in gear, because when you drove cars in the 1970's & 80's you never trusted the handbrake

The stand on the GSA is too long in road or dynamic.
it matters not one toss if you leave it in gear or not the bike is too upright unless you are very selective about where you park and on occasion mine has very nearly been blown over by the wind !

Anyone remembers the dodgy side stand of the Ducati 999 and 749?

Spoke to my dealer about this yesterday and they confirmed that the next generation GS will be a lot better :aidan

I always felt the TC stand was a little short so the bike appeared to lean too far and it made it hard to lift it off the side stand, particularly if the suspension was set for two up. I think BMW tried to address this on the LC and as a result it appears to be too upright when the suspension is in the normal position. You can't please everyone so adapt to it or change it.

Just a clarification. Dynamic ESA does not adjust spring preload, only damping. Therefore does not affect bike height. Adjusting preload for luggage and passenger does.

If you change the settings on the dynamic esa bikes from 1 rider to 2 riders or riders with luggage it DOES CHANGE RIDE HEIGHT.

The problem with the stand is not the angle of lean its that the stand does not swing forward enough and catches people out if the bike move forward a tiny bit the stand folds the older models and other current models are more forgiving and a tiny bit of forwad movement as the bike settles on the stand is not an issue but as stated putting in in gear is a work round once the new owner is aware of the issue usually after they have picked the bike up I was lucky on the demo I tested I put the bike on its side stand climbed off and a second later it fell on me I just stopped it falling this was an issue I had never had with my tc gsa or any other bike so was not expecting it with the lc in the same environment

wonder if this thread will over take the heated grips one now in number of Posts ?

what can we moan about after this ? lets just ride more moan less

I have noticed there is regularly a set of left side genuine engine bars on e bay,
Maybe someone has seen a trend,

Absolutely agree. It leaves the bike too upright

If facing slightly down hill - always leave in gear.

If facing steeply down hill - do a U-turn and park it facing up hill, in or out of gear, optional.

Never leave it on the sidestand with engine idling an unattended. NOT EVEN FOR A SECOND!!!

Ive a GSA (LC) and never had a problem.....

.....Yet! :augie

Sensible advice - A point worth mentioning is that there is noticeable backlash in the transmission so even if left in gear it is still possible for the bike to move a little after it is place on the sidestand, so make sure that you have taken up all the transmission 'slack' before putting the stand down :)

I hope so at least this one hasn't turned into a warranty issue yet ;) anyway seems like the summer weather has temporarily bought a halt to Gripgate :)

More than 2400 views so far so it must be a real problem ;) BMW wouldn't dare improve it on next year's model though, otherwise their will be thousands of people demanding a free upgrade ;)

On the GSA i believe that the stand has to be long enough to cope with being parked whilst in Enduro mode or endure pro or what ever.
The downside of this is that if you are in road or dynamic mode when you stop the stand is too long !
It is too much of a faff to change the ESA just to stop for a fag or a brew.
Some on here seem to think that the side stand isn't too long which makes me wonder f some are and some not ?

Not on my screen you didnt!!!
There are 3 settings for DESA - Soft, Normal & Hard. These settings do not alter ride height or suspension preload. These are adjusted, whilst stationary with engine running, on the same L handlebar control but is a different system entirely.

There is a good argument that if you park somewhere where camber is a little unfavorable, adjusting preload will raise suspension slightly allowing bike to lean a bit more.
