GS dodgy sidestand?

Allowing side stand to swing further forward?

That makes it clearer what you mean.

And, if the side stand is allowed to rotate further forward at it's pivot point, not only does this make it more difficult for the bike to roll over forwards, but it also shortens it's effective length (from pivot to ground), thus making the bike lean further to cope with rising ground on the side stand side.

Well, I'm pleased to report that after a trip to Cornwall this weekend, I deliberately parked the bike uphill, downhill, on grass verges, and in puddles, and it didn't roll off the side stand once.;)

I was thinking along the same lines as Broken Paw. That would be a solution I think. Does any body know if it is doable ?

When I had a 1200 TC, I fitted an enlarged foot. (For parking on grass - camping). I altered the side stand so it rotated a little more as it almost rolled off its stand with the extra foot, hence the alteration. Yes it was a success.

File some metal off the side stand part of the stop (not the frame) so you can restore it to stock, if you need to, by replacing the side stand.

Its too long !!

So,all that is said and argued about on the side stand issue is admirable but it doesn't alter the fact that IT IS TOO FECKIN LONG !!
All the comments about uphill and in gear are fine but it doesn't alter the fact !!

On a recent trip I had to turn the bike around, find a decent camber turn the bars to the right pull the bike back etc etc and still the fecker tried to fall over when I removed my gear from the panniers ! Its just the same without being loaded.

Mines a 2014 GSA LC and I don't give a flying feck what the clever dicks say,IT AINT RIGHT !!!

I've owned two GSA's (non wc ) previously and never had any problems.

When at the dealers the other day I brought the subject up and was told that others had complained, they checked to see if BUMW had done anything about it and came up with a NO Sir !

I was advised to contact BUMW HQ and voice my concerns,in the meantime should my bike topple I don't suppose there will be any hope of a warranty claim.

While I'm at it and to quell the concerns of those who believe some folks do nowt but complain,My Heated Grips are brilliant and my spotlights work fine.:thumb2

However !!!!! My ESA has packed up twice after start up
When everything is switched off and left for a while it works again !! Me no unnerstan :confused:

Its going in for a check (as it did the first time, and they said it was due an update, which obviously aint worked ! )
Looking forward to what they say this time.

Its a minor thing really and as I said, its righted itself but should it happen in the first place ??

Anyone else had this happen ??

Took my R1200GS LC out for her first trip at the weekend and got caught out by the sidestand on a very slight downhill slope, resulting in Beaky taking an unexpected dirtnap.

The F800GS did *not* have this issue; the stand swung farther forward, so made it harder for the bike to roll over the neutral point.

So, yes, the sidestand doesn't swing far enough forward, the crash bars do their job and these bikes aren't so hard to get back upright as I had feared. Lesson learnt, leave in gear.

This thread is not about leaving it in gear or whatever all the answers arte it is about the fact that the Side stand is too long and leaves the bike far too upright.
I believe the stand has to be long to allow for the bike being in its various modes particularly enduro.
I have to be conscious of where or how i park mine which i am but should not have to be quite so !

How about using the centrestand instead:nenau

:augie

Hmmmmmm now you mention it, it takes one hell of a heave to get this new fangled LC contraption onto the centre stand, it obviously ain't right so if it falls over can I get all the repairs done under warranty?

On the other hand there is nothing wrong with my side stand.

Trust me no one understands this shit, not even the people who write the software that controls it - no such thing as perfect software and it is impossible to prove its correctness - it's the modern world and we just have to live with it or not have it :)

If you have issues with side stand length, carry a half inch high piece of wood with you.

Side stand too short? Place under stand.

Side stand too long? Place under rear wheel.

Or you could just move the bike to somewhere else appropriate.

Not that I have ever had a problem with my length.

But does this thread really warrant 3 pages?

Using an angle grinder i've ground the face of the side stand anvil just enough so that the side stand locks out 12mm further forward and can confirm bike is now more reluctant to roll forward off side stand. Angle of lean is more but its marginal it's also okay when ESA set to full load (on a flat surface btw).

Yep it is !!

Well done Broken Paw :bow took the angle grinder to mine t'other day and had a lovely display of sparks rewarding my efforts.:D
Bike now leans a bit more to the side and seems more stable.

After all the to'ing and fro'ing on here a simple application of Zanussi cured the worries.:D

Keep up the good work all those who come up with answers to our fears, and to those clever dicks who never have a problem,God Bless ya,I hope that will be the case all of yr lives !!

Poor design

Yes I have just purchased a 2004 1200GS and the first thing I noticed was the weird design of the side stand. The dealers have a slight incline and the chap actually told me to be careful how I park when using the side stand as they have had a couple go over. To me the stand should be angle much further forward, so it digs in rather than folds up and falls over.

It is really odd how some people have problems with side stands and others don't - I am on my 4th 1200 and it has never been an issue - what's going on?
