Hi all, on Friday my 07 GS engine stopped when coming to a halt twice and re-started both times without any probs. I'm now reluctant to use the bike as I'm worried it will happen at a dangerious moment.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks Nick

Don't touch anything!

There was a time when there were idling screws, pilot jets, cable adjustments etc. to mess about with. Nowadays the first step is to plug it into your dealer's computer and with any luck it can be put right instantly, as mine was a few years ago.

sounds like the all too common Fuel Pump Controller failure.

search that on the site.

My 1200 occasionally stops/stalls/coughs within about 100 yds of home. I put this down to some warming up issues, as it's never done it at any other time (apart from when the fuel pump controller went pop!).

My .....occasionally stops/stalls/coughs within about 100 yds of home...." If it was a horse you'd take it to the vet. Take your bike to the nearest bike vet;

Thanks for the replies.
On the basis that the engine hasn't cut-out like this before, for my piece of mind I'll take it along to the dealers (SBW). Hopefully diagnostics will uncover the problem. As mentioned, wouldn't be surprised if it turns out to be the very topical Fuel Pump Controller.

+1

2 recent threads with very similar symptoms. by me and i think zoltan, search users posts perhaps to limit answers.

FPC failure pending IMO.

May not show at the dealers as a fault yet ;)

I am back to the dealers sometimes this week ( again they can't trace any fault on the computer) . The FPC was changed last week . It does not cut out any longer , but in stop start traffic the idle floats one bar above 1000 revs +/- without settling . It runs badly and is on the verge of cutting out when in drops one bar below 1000 revs.
The dealer emailed Germany for advise , reference the idle adjustment ( is set from factory). Apparently they are not aloud to touch it ( there is a way to increase it via a software ).
Now call me cynical , but after close to £600 I can take so much bullshit. The only saving grace is , I have BMW extented warranty with £ 100 ex.

O...I am going to France on Fri.:blast.

I hope.........

Idle when cold is 1200 revs, less when hot.

If idle is irregular, check the air intake for leaks/loose hoses, get the valve clearances/rocker endfloat set properly, do a TPS reset, synch the throttle bodies at idle (GS911 required) and at 4000 rpm.

All that was done 3 weeks ago when they changed the plugs ( well that what they told me), hence they are running out of ideas . Tomorrow I shall have a answer...Allegedly....

I had this a few times and it was solved by a 6K service and me using a different technique when down changing 3rd to 2nd. Nothing to do with the FPC - in my case anyway. Its a big engine with loads of momentum going both up and down the box that sometimes overwhelms the ECU. In my humble and very personal opinion of course.:)

Fantastic !!! I've never heard that one before. I hope you don't mind me quoting this, occasionally. :)

Another possibility is the coils. Can be difficult to tell if they're gone sometimes without just changing them as they can test ok (using a multimeter), but still be faulty.

If the idle is not settling down and is hunting then there is a fault that I would suggest resetting the engine idle will not cure. It may mask it, but I wouldn't personally want that. If the idle was steady, but 1000 revs too low then I would say go ahead and get it reset.

To be honest it could be any of the suggestions on here. It's just a case of going through them. One thing's for sure. whatever it is it'll be the last thing you try. :D

Let us know

As nix is taking it to the dealers there seems little point in making further suggestions/guesses/ advice. BUT nix had better let all the experts know who was on target!

For what it's worth my 06 GS suffered very similar symptoms which were eventually resolved by replacing the coils.

Diagnostic tests at the dealer didn't identify the problem - they had to resort to swapping out components until the problem went away. Took them a day or two to get to the bottom of it but have had no problems since.

So this is certainly a possibility.

Good luck.

Feel free. Yeah, in retrospect it's probably a wacky idea - maybe not my best:nenau

After much persuation and stating that I'll use my relialbe Harley until the problem is resolved, SBW have reluctantly agreed to look at the GS on Friday. However, because they're very busy at the moment (probably replacing Fuel controllers), they can't spend much time replacing components etc.
If it's the fuel controller will this be reveiled using diagostic equipment ?.

I'll post the outcome.
