GS in 6'x4' Trailer

Has anyone tried their GS in a 6'x4' trailer?

I transport my G650XC in the trailer, albeit diagonally, and can close the tailgate.

Picking up a new GSA on Weds. Trying to work out logistics.

By my calculations it should be marginally shorter than the G650XC and *should* fit diagonally.

Just thought I'd ask if anyone here has done it.

- Diagonal dimension of 6x4 trailer is 219.8cm
- G650 Wheelbase is 150cm. Add radius of 21" ft wheel + radius of 18" rear wheel = 199.5cm
- R1200 Wheelbase is 151cm. Add radius of 19" ft wheel + radius of 17" rear wheel = 196.7cm.

In theory, the GSA *should* fit. XC goes in well - ride on, drag rear to side corner, strap on. But extra width and weight of GSA may inhibit.... Dunno.

I'd say it wouldn't go, as you wont get much diagonal action because of the width.

You may need another plan.......

Hmm - its a decent Ifor Williams 6x4 trailer. Would rather sell it and get Motolug collapsible trailer than de-value the Ifor Williams.

Have you thought of things like

A Taxi?

Delivery?

Damaging the bike in a too small trialer will cost you a whole lot more.


My 1200GS fitted with an ADV rack and a Givi style top box is just a little under 9' long.
Add to that the handlebars at 36 inches, you will struggle to get the bike in with help from the dealer, let alone out again on your own.

We carry both our GS's in a trailer, but it's 10'x5'6" and I still have to remove my panniers to get them both in.

If you know someone with a three bike (one in the middle) motocross trailer then you will get the bike on that. I've used one a couple of times with no probs.

You've calculated wheelbase and wheel diameter but forgot about tyres!

You can squeeze a bit by using steering lock but it will not work well. Option is a sheet of THICK plywood on the floor, full width of the trailer and about 18" longer. The bikes weight will hold the wood down but you will need some careful lashing down. Imagine if it fell over whilst watching it in the rear view mirror

Doh re tyres; but enough slack in the diagonal dimension to cover. Yes good point about the board - did think of that but will make loading tricky for sure. Good lashing needed deffo.

OK - let's do the maths.

If we presume you're spending in excess of £15K are you really going to trust this expensive new piece of kit to a piece of ply on an undersized trailer?

If you can afford a GSA you can afford a van for the day

Trust plywood extension. Yup. Its basic engineering principles at work here.

Re van hire - yup sure can do that too. Even better - will see if dealer can deliver; can stretch to that too.

Just throwing thoughts around. Reckon will play with GS in 6x4 trailer when I get it home - just out of curiosity !
