Hi Folks, changed my 1150RT for a low miles 05 GS in Feb.

Last week I parked it in my usual place at work on a paved area near the front doors at work. Unfortunately, a friend managed to reverse into the bike and it fell against the wall!

I am pricing up the parts before going to insurance as the friend (a doctor) can afford to pay and I do not want to be messing up my no claims when my car insurance is due soon.

Minor damage was caused to: R/H mirror, R/H hand guard, screen, plastic rocker guard, rear rack and lids to both brand new panniers.

I will be happy with good s/h parts but need to know if the pannier lids can be easily dismantled to replace the mouldings from the main panel? This would mean I only need one new lid to repair the two.

Are there better-priced alternatives or upgrades to OEM parts for mirrors, hand guards, screen? For example, I may get a givi rack for my unused Maxia box.

If costs are too expensive I will be using the insurance.

Pleasant replies please as I am still gutted about the bike being knocked over :tears

Check out the Motor Works link at the top of the page for OEM bits. Good prices for second hand stuff. Bloody good service too. :thumb2

Try Motorworks on Tuesday do not if at all possible involve your Insurence. Why not the offending party's Insurence ? Surly it's his baby to pay up one way or the other. Get a quote for all the parts as cheap as you can and let him decide wheather to pay or get his ins co to pay. JJH

I damaged the silver section on a vario pannier shortly after getting my first 1200GS. Unfortunately BM did not supply just that part and a lid cost about £110 + £15 for the transfer.....and that was about 5 years ago!

Sorry to give such bad news.

Mike

You will not be mucking up YOUR no claims, as you would be claiming off the third party, your friend.

The way that you are doing it the only person to lose out will be you. Why? YOU will be spending the time sourcing, repairing and fitting the parts. All your friend will do is write you out a cheque.

But if that is the way you want to go......

Motorworks, Ebay, the FSW section of UKGSer (it will cost you a subscription to view, I suggest you bill your friend) or the regular parts shop of any BuMW dealers are your friends, too.

Friend or no friend I would not be happy having to repair it myself and sourcing the parts, If he had sat on it with my permision and he dropped it that is different as being friends you need to keep the cost down as no insurance he has would pay for the damage.

seeing as he knocked it over with his car let his insurance sort it ,and get all new parts like you have on now. It will learne him a lesson too to watch where fook he is going in future.

I have an unused 1200 pannier lid in my garage still in its BMW box, bought as a replacement for a damaged lid but never fitted.

£50 plus postage if you want it. PM me if interested (you'll need to subscribe to PM me).

I think it may even have an original "R1200GS" in the box, but can't be sure from the comfort of my keyboard.

IIRC you just tap out the hinge pins to remove the lid, then fit the new one and tap the pins back in.

This is an insurance job, you are being too nice at great cost of time/trouble.

Claim, and have done with it :comfort

.....or just get a quote for repairs, then give you friend the choice to pay or claim??

Thanks for the replies folks.

I will contact Motor Works to price things up and BMW dealer for price of vario lids.

I will show total price to friend and let them decide to pay cash or use insurance.

If insurance is used I will have no option but to inform my own insurance. I know I will not be at fault and will get my no claims back. However, I have had two previous bumps that were not my fault but it took months to get the no claims returned to my next policy after renewal. It also makes it harder to shop for a cheaper deal.

Pukemaster, thanks for the offer and I will register this week to pm if I am buying the parts.

Regards
Gerry
