Hello,
My blue GS is due here in the US next week and I was talking to the BMW dealer about adding auxiliary lights. The dealer informed me that because of the single wire and fuseless electrical system in the GS, BMW has issued bulletins recommending against installation of lights and other add-ons. This also might be due to a lack of knowledge of the bike in the US between dealers. A friend recommended adding this Touratech TPS 15 CAN Bus Output Helper :

Your feedback is appreciated.

I think that there are a few ways that you could do this.

Firstly, simply wire the lights directly from the battery with a switch (and fuse) in line. This would definately work, but isn't a very elegant solution as the lights could be left or switched on after you wlked away from the bike.

But the Touratech gizzmo seems ideal for what you want to do. Personally, I'd go that route.

Have a look at THIS thread I have them fitted to my bike and haven't experienced any problems also my local dealer had alook and confirmed thats how they would install aux lights if required.

Does the 1200 use an earthing indicator cancel like the R11xxGS does?

If so, you could still use an Autoswitch.

I fitted some without problems

I fitted the Touratech HID and Fog lights without a problem and without the CAN bus helper.

The lights are powered from the battery and the relays draw power from the high and low beam headlights. The HID comes on with the High beam, the fog is switched but the relay is powered from the low beam.

The lights each have their own fuse which is mounted in line on the possitive terminal connections.

Dealer did not express any concern about the install.

That may well be BMW's "official" stance, but it's 100% crap. You can quite safely add all the aux lights, GPS, radar detector, satellite radio, etc. you want. Just don't tie into the CANBus. Do it with a relay to isolate your mods from the CANBus. I wrote a Webpage describing how to add a relay to your R12GS. It's really quite easy.

Totally unnecessary if you go the relay route...
