GS Wheel Balancing Glasgow Area

Hi,

Just had a rear tyre fitted to my 08 R1200GS in Paisley and the guy didn't
have the right bits to balance the wheel. I've phoned a few places and it
seems the rear wheel needs a special BMW part to do the job. Now the West coast shop has gone, does anyone know anywhere local to Glasgow you can get a rear wheel balanced or do I need to travel to Dalkeith?

Strathearn Tyres in Crieff. Never had any problems with them not being able to balance a bike wheel.

Thanks for the feedback... much appreciated. I'll have a ride out to
either Crieff (nicer ride) or Dalkeith (pick up some bits while I'm there).

Time I dumped IT and became a bike mechanic in Glasgow I reckon.
Now to convince one of the local colleges to run a mechanics course
on evenings and weekends.

Slightly closer to you might be JK Motorcycles in Springkerse Ind Estate, Stirling. I had 2 Pilot Road 3 tyres fitted to my BMW recently and there were no problems with the wheel balancing.

you can go to Mickey oates they did my 1150gsa rear wheel or the Ducati shop should be able to handle the 1200 rear wheel as a lot of Dukes have single sided swing arms

only use Dalkieth if you really need to, they'll probably try and charge you extra since they didn't fit the tyre

Do they really need balanced? Try riding for a bit first. Mite be ok. Never needed to balance any of my bike wheels.

Thanks for the reply all. Just so anyone else reading this knows -- I phoned the Ducati shop and Mickey Oates and neither can do the GS (not an adventure) rear wheel.

First time I've ordered a tyre from the internet and not from a shop. Bought the rear from oponeo.co.uk for a good price and took it down to Ride n Fit in Paisley thinking I'd save myself a few quid. The guy in Paisley was good as gold fitting the tyre for me. But it came to the balancing when we had trouble. The rear mag wheel on the GS has a big hole in the middle and the cones for the balance machine go right through. I tried down the road at Avuss and the guy there had the same issue. Told me he'd bought the attachment for the BMW RT and that sorted most BMWs but not this. He kindly phoned a few other places and they told him the same thing. I called the Honda guy near the Clydeside expressway and he knew what I was talking about straight away, so obviously a common request, but didn't know anyone who had the bits. Had a quick look on t'interweb and Marc Parnes in the states sells a balancer with the special GS fitting. Sadly it's $140.. which means I'm away to the BMW dealer to get it balanced.

I bought the bike as it has everything I wanted and a little cheaper than
the GSA. Starting to think I should have got myself an order GSA for the same money.

Do you need to balance bike tyres
Reason I ask is that I never have and was once told by a well known bike shop that it's even more critical on a bike than a car. Cant say that I've ever noticed or felt a bike tyre out of balance. Now a car , well , thats a diffrent story .

If you can't get anyone to balance your tyre use dyna beads,no weights needed,perfectly balanced everytime.

I don't think BMW balance the rears from new, I have always fitted my own tyres and have never felt the need to get them balanced and never noticed any difference from the tyres that were on from new..

I am sure that there will be many who disagree but it works for me.

That's weird re Ducati Glasgow not being able to balance a rear GS wheel,
As they fitted a set of Roadsmarts to my GS last week & managed to balance the rear.

Try any of the national tyre chains - They're used to balancing all kinds of alloy wheels and stuff.
I get my tyres fitted an balanced at our local "TyreSpot".

I'm sure you'll have equivalents locally.



PS: Anyone who doesn't bother with getting their wheels balanced when new tyres are fitted, either:

a) Doesn't ride above walking pace.
b) Has been exceptionally lucky to get tyres perfecty matched to their wheels.
c) Has the sensitivity of a large rock.

BALANCING

my 2011 gs had 60 grms on the rear wheel from factory just fitted a new tyre had to put 90 grms on opposite tyre pressure sensor i have my own balancer as i fit my own tyres bought an adapter from marc in the states only about 25 quid posted from usa bargain

This is stupid.

Any BMW r1200 wheel can be balanced dymamically on a standard car wheel balancer. Because of the large hole in the middle, you just put it straight onto a car wheel balancer.
I usually get mine done on one.

The front cannot be done on the same machine.

Long story short, balance weight fell off the front wheel & Ducati Glasgow couldn't refitbitbtill next week, so poped into Ride & Fit in Paisley yesterday.
no problem to do it there & then, guy was brill & the charge was very reasonable, will go there next time for tyres etc.
Would reccomend them as they were friendly , helpfull & great value.
Pity that most dealers can't manage that.

Feck im confused now the first post on here said ride n fit paisley couldnt balance the rear wheel , nor ducati glasgow ??

So where to go for tyres outwith dalkeith, ive a 2010 gs with spoked wheels and tyre pressure monitors fitted, would think i might need a set before my eorotrip in august but dont want any dramas or people fecking about with my wheels that dont know what they are doing.
