Hi all, shes booked in the friday for waht i thought would be simple "1 year service" only to find she needs (in one go) 1; a 12month service, got her jan last year, PLUS 2 ; the normal 7500/8000 MILE service? what gives , never had that before on any vehicle, 2 or four wheels! help anyone?

There have been discussions about this before, albeit some time back. From memory, my understanding this that there's a reasonable overlap between periodic servicing and 'mileage' servicing.

Some dealers are passionate about both, as it increases their revenue/margin, however, I just stick to the mileage services, and as yet have not had the 'yearly' service issues mentioned.

I'd ask them to stipulate what the difference is personally, or just ask for one or the other.... with a preference towards mileage, so it looks consistant in your service book...

The main "extra" in the annual service is the changing of the brake fluid. Most of the other items are duplicates of the milage based service, and hence not relevant unless your bike hasn't been used much.

Check the FAQ section, there's a link in there where you can get the schedule for all these different services.

Yep,thanks all, Im gonna ask exactly what they propose to do and why, cheers all, gotta keep those beer tokens to myself! :beerjug:

They should do the mileage based service or the annual service, but as pointed out earlier, some dealers have been known to say you need both done at the same time, which is bull. Take a look here and you can see the schedule for both services and compare them.

My dealer told me yesterday that BMW had just told him that the 12 month brake fluid change was to be increased to 24 months so in effect there is now nothing extra in the 12 month that isnt in the 6k. So check with your dealer and make sure that you are not being charged for the annual. I'm not.

Just a footnote to the above concerning brake fluid changes - this has now gone to 2 years for the wheel circuits & 4 years for control circuits on integral abs equipped bikes. Non abs bikes have gone to 2 years.
This only applies to bikes fitted with the BMW stahlflex braided brake lines.
The std rubber hosed equipped bikes remain at 12mnths for non abs bikes. 12mnths for wheel circuits & 24mnths for control circuits on the INTEGRAL ABS equipped bikes.
For the people who don't know what integral abs is , its the one that whines when the brakes are activated

Mine is twelve months old at the end of this month and has done almost 9k miles.

It had the 6k service late last summer and so the next service will be 12k.

I'm told that you should have the 12 month service, mainly if you don't do many miles each year. If the 12k mile service isn't far off then I wouldn't bother with one at 12 months.

Will BMW change the service intervals?

Just had my bike into Vines for the ABS check/software update/fuel seal replacement, and I asked whether the annual brake fluid change is still recommended by BMW. Seems not, as long as brake hoses of a particular type are fitted, and as the GS has the requisite hoses (braided?), the fluid change is only needed every 2 years. I don't think there is much else in the annual service, apart from the usual 'checks'. I wonder whether BMW will change their official service recommendations for the 1200GS. Anyone know if the latest production bikes have had a change to the recommended service intervals?

I don't think I'll bother with my first year annual service now - I can always use the money saved to buy some more goodies :D

12 month service

:eek
I rang Vines this morning to ask about my GS as it will be 1 year old in March. They said it would need both the annual and 6,000 service (it will be about that mileage by then) and they do change the brake fluid at that time. They said combining them would save me about £100 although it would still cost about £300. This still seems a bit high to me considering what they do and that the bike is only 1 year old. Is there no set prices for these services there is for my car??

Dave

They're ripping you off. The 12 month service now contains nothing that is not done anyway in the 6000 - as per BMW. The quoted cost for the 6000 on my bike is £120 based on approx 2 hours work! (which is I suppose better than my dentist who charges £50 for 10 minutes :( ) My dealer said they would 8include the 12 months in the charge for the 6000 since nothing extra was needed.

Only cavet is that I've just ridden home their service loan bike - a one lunger witha rubber band drive. And if that bike is an indication of their maintenance standard...............................

Remember that cost for the 6k service includes 4 litres of engine oil, oil filter, air filter (maybe that's every 12k, I forget) and other misc consumables. That's about the price that my dealer (Southport Superbikes) has charged me for all the services so far, I think it's a very fair price given what some people on these forums have paid!

(That's the £120 price I'm taking about not the £300!!)

service

The bike would have done between 6-7K by March. I will have to try and speak to Darren I only managed to speak to his side kick today. £300 seems way over the top for the first year I didn't even pay anything like that for the 12K service on my Yamaha.

Just paid around £150 for a 6000mile service at Clarks in Dundee.

GS now a year old, but given the recent change in BMW policy re changing the brake fluid (see posts above), the work done on the 6000 and "1st" annual service is the same.

Works also included software update, "brake" check and new front brake mounting shims (to stop brake squeal).

PS Paid about £350 quid for a 3000mile service on my old Ducati 4 year ago.

£300 for a 12 month service is way over the top. Consider switching dealers. SPC charged me £174 for a 6k service and the next one is at 12k, not at 12 months (I specifically asked "so that's about Oct/Nov time" and they said "Yes"). The bike was 9 months old at the 6k. Service intervals are usually 6k or 12 months whichever comes first, so you ONLY need the 12 month service if your bike hasn't done 6k miles. This should be documented clearly in the owner's manual (haven't checked).

On the other hand I don't do over 9k pa in my car (Lexus) so I usually get the 12 monthly service. That's definitely 9k miles or 12 months whichever comes first.

Seriously, any dealer who says you need both the 12 monthly service AND the n*6k mile service is almost certainly talking complete crap. Consider writing a letter to them (just asking), so as to get written confirmation then shopping them to BMW. You'll probably find their letter confirms what I'm saying.

Just had annual service ( only done 2000 miles ) done at Southport Superbikes which involved changing oil and filters only, cost me £142.00 but brake fluid not changed until next year.
