my 05 gs1200 has a crack on the bracket that supports the rear of the gearbox (just above the back brake lever). Has anyone else spotted this on their bike. I wanted a bit of feedback before I take the bike to my local dealer.

Mark, I'm going to shift your post over to the 1200 section of the forum where I think you'll get a better response to your post.

:)

Mark..........................................

Any chance of a picture to show what we need to look for?

Thanks,
Keith.

It was my thread

Hi GS Mark

As you have prob read it was my thread re frame cracking, got the usual ****ers replying!! :tosser

But anyway…..when I bought my new GS 1200 (04 plate) always thought it had a bad vibration via pegs and the especially the bars, nothing changed after 6 thou service ……thought hmmmm just needs more miles etc, then noticed the frame cracked, had this changed under warranty etc and the bike was so smooth when returned, think it cracked at about 8,000’ish miles.

My theory is the crack was caused by not all bolts been secured at correct torque settings etc, hence vibration.

No probs up to selling the bike now have 1200 Adv (fast alpine white one!) :thumb2

PM

me if you want to chat on the phone

many thanks for the feedback. the crack is in the same place as team duvet photo's. I did wonder if the 10mm longer than standard maxton shock might have had something to do with it. I will now approach my local dealer to see if I can get a new frame out of warranty.

I still have my OE shocks if you wish to have a lend so it is standard when you take it in....:thumb

still got the original to put back when I sell it.
thanks
mark

There was a slight change to the lower part of the frame on 06 models. I wonder if this fracture happens with 06 and later models?

I´m waiting one answer from my dealer. They are asking BMW Spain.

Lets wait and cross fingers. I took out my bike from the changing out of warranty of the gear box and clutch, with 46.000 km and 3 years.

Really I´m having very bad luck with this bike. Bmw is not what it use to be.

Mark, did you get to the bottom of the issue with the cracked frame and was it indeed a 'known problem'? What did the BMW dealer say? It has happened with my bike.

known problem. It happens when technicians put the bike back together after they have dealt with -another known problem- one of the many seals that eventually go wrong.

I would assume the final output shaft seal on your bike needed replacement. Mechanics put the bike back together but did not strickly follow the sequence of bolt tightening (needs religious effort) and thus the result.

Apparently not a huge issue to continue using the bike like this... well...
