Inexperienced? Let’s see. I started riding in 1976. I took a break and began riding again in 1993. Since 1993 I have ridden almost every day.
New to motorcycling? Well, the R1200GS is my 5th BMW. (I traded a K1200RS for it.) My Monster S4R is my 4th Ducati. (I’ve also owned a Honda and two Kawasakis.)
Do I take the R1200GS “off road”? Not much. I check out dirt roads in the area and I look for fire roads when I go to the mountains. 90 to 95% of my riding is on the pavement but that’s not a bad thing.
Do I get it dirty? Not often, but I don’t mind riding in the rain.
Yes, I’ve got a Savannah II suite and a Aria DX. The Savannah II suite “works”. It’s the best riding gear that I have . . . . and I have a “Stich” too. I bought an Aria DX because I like the visor. (But I won’t use it tomorrow because it is supposed to be below freezing and the XD’s long snoot lets in too much air.)
I’ve talked to a few R1200GS owners in the area and most of them have similar profiles. Some have ridden more. Some have ridden less. But they’re all relatively experienced riders who wanted something different, fast and comfortable for a long ride.
Go figure.
