Just looking at my new GSA ally side boxes, and reading the manual.
The book says BMW can supply carry handles.

Can anyone stick a photo on here showing me what the "optional extra" carry handles look like?

Please.

Are they worth getting?

Phil

:) they are in the luggage section of the Motorrad catalogue !
I have them, I like them, they also double up as load straps if you need them, about £22 each tho....

I always thought they were the detachable straps fitted to the inner bags BMW do for their GSA luggage :nenau

This is probably a stupid question, but " motorrad catalogue" -- What's that?

Is it the brochure that they have in the showrooms?

Is there a version on-line? -------I know, I'll have a look!

Phil

Right - I've had a look. It's the "H" shaped bits on the tiny little photo in the catalogue.
They look like they attach to the tie-down brackets on the lids, but can't see the detail in the photo.
What are they made of? Are they straps, or rigid plastic?
How easy are they to take off? I'm thinking of light fingered larrys here.

Phil

I made these myself from the straps that hold down new BMW's in their crates. Cheap'n cheerful from your local friendly BMW dealer :thumb

Without the straps the panniers are like juggling with an eel out of water

Left the straps long enough to tie down fings on the pannier lids

they are straps, they attach to the tie down points, they use double over velcro to fasten, it would take about 3 mins a side to remove if that way inclined

you could just unclip the handle part leaving 4 small buckles on the bike.... that'd take about 2 secs...

I thought those handles were too expensive, plus you've gotta take them off when you ride (or it seems like they'd flop around). I just use simple straps going across the pannier (like Micky's without the black cross strap): very cheap, work fine as handles, and can be left on the pannier all the time.

Funners - splendid picture thanksamillion, and you say you'd recommend them?

Phil
Yes I would TBH, there are other ways of achieving the same effect but I LIKE the proper article...they also have a natty 1200 Adventure logo on them !:D

I happen to like your solution mate, it's basically the BMW set up without the price tag !;)
on this occasion I'd bought the gen stuff before I saw yours... but I still like the gen ones as well...:thumb2

GSA Box Carry Handles DIY

I noticed a few threads kicking around on carry handles..

Of course there are some resourceful Tossers that have made their own.

Some go for the mega priced factory OE

Toying with the idea of the DIY option and searching around for materials, found this site which has all the kit - webbing, fastners various etc. and seems reasonable

http://www.acesupplies.co.uk/index.html

I'm going to give it a go - and check out the quality. If I make a decent job I'll post some pics

Are "these" perhaps the ones you were looking for..... :augie

Made by the Goose-man!

Just face the facts - you chaps just have to open accounts with me :thumb2

Here are the real McCoy. Cost me £42 from Motorrad in 2008 and extremely well made, but very expensive. They expand to wrap a very large lead if necessary

A challengs is how to re route the excess straps when not in use and they involve a lot of re threading.
They are invaluable when the boxes are heavily laden

I understand that you also get the same straps if you purchase the BMW inner bags, which may be much better value, but I don't know this for sure :D

I made a set of home made ones out of thin cam belts fed through the eyes looped over and then pop rivetted the ends together.
