Hi all, Happy New Year,

Has anyone fitted a different colour clocks background/fascia on their GS/GSA?

I found this on eBya:

"BMW 1200 GS Speedo Face Speedo kit Speedo dial Kit"

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260527704709&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

My question is: the seller states that the warranty may be void by changing the clocks' background...

Anyone knows if that's the case?

In advance, thanks for any advice.

Regards.

Warranty voidance?

I guess it could in respect of the clocks only. But only in as much as you would have tapered with them. Anything else I cannot see being effected. Within two years of first purchase the bike will be out of warranty anyway.

The question is, why would anyone want to change the dials, unless converting a KPH bike to UK specification?

After years riding Ducatis I still find it hard to get used to black backgrounds, especially on long runs in poor light or at night.

I'm probably going to regret asking this.......

.....but what is that dial at the top left of the dials? :nenau

... I am regretting having asked the question now!

I know it's not as technical and exciting as full exhaust line change, engine management or ECU re-programming. I was only asking for a bit of advice.

I guess I'll sell my GSA and buy a half-fairing 1991 Ducati 750 SS...

... with nice white clocks!!!

;) ;) ;)

That right there is a luvverly view:thumb

... many moons ago I had one ... white frame, white wheels ...

... I've always regretted selling it ...

It was far from being the fastest thing but it was a pleasure to ride ...

Why the regret?

You have had at least one of your two questions (that relating to a possible warranty issue) answered, hopefully correctly. And, in return, been kind enough to answer a question about why you might want to change the clocks' faces in the first place. That you response prompted a mildly humorous suggestion in reply is not your fault.

It is a shame that nobody has come forward helping you with any additional info. on the fitting of the alternative dials. I can only assume they are not that popular a bling item? Though the thread's link may yet prove helpful to bods who import kpm calibrated bikes, who then need to find suitable mph dials. There was a lengthy thread on the very topic not so long ago.

So, in short, a triumph for the UKGSer Technical section... Probably the only one of the year.

You mean you actually want to fit them...?

Yeah, Wapping's right - nobody has actually really said anything useful about changing those speedo/tacho faces...So in an effort to improve (or ruin) the track record, here goes with my 2p worth....
I bought a set of replacement speedo/tacho faces for my GS from the FleaBay seller - They arrived quickly enough and seem to be nicely finished and are of accurate size and cut.
I ordered dials with Km readings only as I bought a new GSA with free panniers in the UK last summer and rode the bike to Spain (where I live), and I wanted the speedo to show Kph as the principal reading - the dual scale UK dial was a pain for full-time life on the continent.
The instructions are incredibly short - the longest part of the instructions is the warning about affecting the warranty...Apart from that all they say is "remove old face, fit new one" and no more than that.
The warranty would surely go out the window if you go to your dealer with an issue that is related to the instrument console after you have changed the speedo/tacho faces. So if you get an issue then just change them back to the originals before you take the bike in....
Fitting the parts is actually quite straightforward.
First, remove the instrument cluster - take off the windscreen and then remove three c-clips from the mounting points underneath the cluster.(Pushing down on the cluster relieves the pressure from the rubber grommets and helps to get the clips out easier) Un-plug the wiring ( squeeze the clips on the sides of the plug) and the cluster lifts out. Careful with it... could cost a fortune if you drop it...
On the back of the cluster there are five allen screws, undo them and the bezel and glass lift off. Also the small rod that resets the trip will drop out....Remember which way round it was fitted....(ah)...
The needles can then be carefully removed - levering them off with two tea-spoons works nicely. The faces are not glued down, they lift off quite nicely if you GENTLY lift the face away from the locating pin in the bottom right corner ( use a fine pointed something, not a chisel) and then rotate the face so that the cutouts in the centre of the dial can lift over the keyed moulding that surrounds the spindle. Fit the new faces, replace the needles - they are keyed to fit more or less in the "zero" position - don't forget the trip-reset rod before you screw it all back together and fit the cluster on to the bike....
I am pleased with the result on my bike - I went for it and ordered the red "Mars landscape" and the funky red glow at night beats white black or grey hands-down....:aidan

Excellent 'How to do it and what to watch out for' write up from GSmiles. :clap

There are often threads about changing from KM calibrated clocks to MPH (and visa-versa) along with requests on where to source new dials. This thread has all the answers.

Maybe one for Toad's new 'sticky'?

A big "THANK YOU!!!" to both GSmiles and Wapping for their time and experience.

I wish you guys worked for my local bank and taught them about customer service and helpfulness...
That would avoid me an ulcer and tearing my hair off...

I shall change the fascias when I receive them, taking loads of time and being careful not to break anything... and remembering which way the rod goes... ("Oh... matron!!!").

And I'll use the opportunity to fit my little "Accelerator-thingy"... but that is an altogether different thread!!!

I guess I won't buy anything Italian soon then...

Anyway, cheers guys, keep it upright in the snow!

Thanks for the write up, I quite like the aluminium ones:augie years ago I fitted a replacement dial set to a ZX9r and found they looked great in the day but at night they looked quite 'patchy' where the illumination wasn't quite right coming through the dial face, how do you find these?

The red "Mars" ones I got light up very nicely indeed - my rotten photo kind of lets them down a bit....the faces are not at all patchy and the numbers are well defined- I think the guy who is making these is doing a very good job, especially for the price...

Cheers, looks like this could be the next mod :)
