Hello. this is my first post!

I've fallen for the 1200GS and 1200GSA. I like all the gadgets, riding height, Looks, bottom end power and grunt etc. However the more I've read on forums like this one I'm starting to think I need to look around at other bikes, just to be sure that spending £12000 on a BMW is the right thing to do. I looked around yesterday and saw Hondas, Kawasaki's, Susuki's etc but although I haven't riden any of them I keep getting drawn back to the BMW as my number one choice! As I own a small but fast sport bike I don't want another back aching ride. So sport bikes are out, that said, I hate the thought of being left behind by sport bike riders! I won't be touring much but want to have a bike that does. It will be garaged most of the time and let out after work on some evenings and weekend rideouts but I do want to travel on some occasions. The bike must be fun, fast but comfy and will go everywhere happily. I won't be off roading!

I have test riden 2x GSA 1200 from BMW dealer for about 1.5 hours on each. So far I was not impressed with motorway comfort. The bike really vibrates about 85mph+ badly in my opinion. The bike is fast on A roads no problem but didn't seem to be comfy on open fast roads. Mirrors were blerry, and wind turbulence was very noticeable. I ride an RD350R with full fairing which rides smoother than the BMW at these speeds.

So my question is do many of you here ride alot on motorways and at what average speed? Are you happy with top speed? Don't get me wrong, I don't want to do 150+MPH but 85-90-100 MPH should be better from a bike of this size / cost surely?

Welcome to the site ;)

I've got an 1150 ADV and find its great at 80-100mph but can't comment on the 1200, although there were a few on our ride down to Rome in June... didn't hear any complaints about their manners on the motorway.. and we were'nt hanging around :thumb2

Sounds to me like you have already made your mind up, couldnt you find all the other faults ? I sit comfortably around the 80 mark on motorways remembering I am on a big German twin and not a precision Jap 4.

:D

Hi BeemerBaz, you've got me, what other faults did I miss?

Paul.

Hi Bryn, Well It was my first impression of the bike at high speed, felt vibrations that I was not expecting. My 2nd test ride proved same. Tested 57 GSA12 7000miles and 08 GSA12 1800miles. Maybe GS owners get used to it and think nothing of it after a while, it just surprised and disappointed me thats all?

Ive done 37000 miles on my 06 GS now, most of them on the motorway and it gets sweeter and smoother with every mile I put on it.

You will get a dozen different opinions from a dozen different folk on here so just go with your gut!

Gu steady what ever you do.

:thumb

GS's are GS's.
It either makes sense to you or it doesn't.
My 1st impression after a 2 hr test ride was - NO WAY would I swap my 'Bird for this heap of junk.

6 months and 1 test ride later I traded for an 1150GSA.

Never looked back...
:D

On private roads:augie it will sit at 90 all day long, I came back home from Budapest in one day 1150 miles of mostly motorway, at times (once all the 'old boys' had given up trying to keep up;)) I did tankfulls at 110 ish (where legal) no problem.

Shep

As long as you don't stop for all your buddies fuel stops you will easily beat them to most destinations.

Get a car if you think the GSA is uncomfortable on the M way.

I did over 2000 miles on mine last week, over the alps and then mile munch back on the autoroute.

We did 470 miles on the last day, with 2 short stops, one for fuel and one for lunch.

Sat at 90 ish all the way-piece of piss, especially with a throttle lock.

Nearly fell asleep !!

I need a throttle lock thanks for reminding me

:blast

mine zips along, there are other factors weather and road conditions unless your riding on an indoor test track. Your doing about 100 at times that's is still fast in my book :augie

mine feels happiest at 85 and is alright up to about 100 then I really have to think about what I'm doing. (Not cos it's harder but stuff gets in my way faster)

The GSA was a tourer the last time I looked after all if you need to go faster to get to your holiday destination take a plane and have the bike freighted :thumb2

It's a twin so it will vibrate a bit all twins do, as oppossed to a jap 4 cylinder and it's an adventure tourer and not a full touring model so there will be some wind.

The bikes top speed is about 130mph :augie so it should be fast enough in most conditions imho.

It's a giant twin - it's going to vibrate more than a jap 4 - simple physics.
On the other hand I never rode a more comfortable bike for long distances. I recently rode more thn 1200km in one hit and, although I was a bit weary, I would have been happy to do another 200km.
A rice rocket can beat me over 100km, but not over 1000km:thumb

How much of your riding is spent on motorways :nenau if it is a small percentage then why worry. :mmmm Just get the GS and a satnav and start taking the "road less travelled" and it all makes sense. Most GS owners avoid motorways like the plague if possible anyway. If you are travelling with mates on sportsbikes and they want to bugger off into the distance on boring motorways then let them. Agree to meet your mates at the destination and plot your own route on a satnav using A/B roads and back lanes and just enjoy the trip and your superior tank range - that's when the GS comes good. I guarantee that after a few months your sports bike will be gathering dust:thumb

I live in Devon with plenty of A/B roads. Main route to motorways is the A38 to M5 at Exeter.

Why is that? I hope to ride to scotland and that will require motorway riding?

Mmmm hope not, it cost me an absolute fortune buying and restoring it!

Cheers
Paul.

Its only that motorways are dull dull dull :thumb2

If you're a fair weather rider I would wait till next year as there's rumours of a lot of new bikes coming out in the "Adventure" class.

That said I love my GSA and also have an R1, the R1 hasn't turned a wheel since the GSA arrived.......nuff said!
