GSA on Motorways - Comfy at What Speed?

Hi cocokid, I live in St.Budeaux - how about that - small world really!

Great advise guys, all opinions considered! many thanks! I am taking a standard 1200GS out for a test ride tomorrow for 2.5 hours but it's on a 58 plate so probably will not be any better than previous GS's I've tried as these bikes seem to improve with age and mileage. GT Motorcycles in Plymouth have two GSs around £8000 or so each between 55 and 56 plates respectively. Not sure I want to buy one of these bikes with only 3 month warranty!!! I love the idea of A/B roads to Scotland, I will def do that rather than hours of motorways. I'm not in a position to buy right now as I'm saving up for a deposit on the GS which I hope to buy Mar 09. Having said all that, with all the doom and gloom of the economy I'm wondering if this will effect me buying the bike next year? I'm self employed plus will be relying heavily on Ocean BMW to buy the bike!!! My preference so far is a GSA but we'll see. I also plan to visit the NEC motorbike show in November to see if BMW release anything new for the GS range for 2009.

constant 100-120mph sitting on the Autobahn on the GSA, fast tranquillity

The UK maximum speed limit is 70MPH!!

Are you admitting on a public internet forum frequented by traffic police officers that you have broken the speed limit on your test ride?

:nenau

The clue is in the word Autobahn:augie

Not you Jezza .. the new bloke who took out a dealer's bike and rode it like he stole it

Although .. do you ride above the legal speed limit? :nenau :D

Sorry mate, credit crunch has screwed up my remaining grey matter.

And yes, until they make us wear nappies, stabilisers, airbags on our bikes, etc I will ring my bikes neck at every safe occasion

and who the hell are you ????
If I'm going to spend £12000 buying a motorbike I want to know what it's like at all reasonable speeds, and no I DID NOT ride it like I stole it. I suggest before you get hi and mighty that you get your facts right first - you tit!

WOW what a bike!!!

OK, my concerns about motorway long distance riding have been resolved. I took a 58 plate GS (not GSA) out for a test ride today with only 537 miles on the clock in this gorgious sunshine from 9.30am to 12.10pm.

General Ride
I rode on all type of roads long dual carriage ways and A/B roads. There were a number of slow cars, lorries and tractors out today and difficult to overtake on country roads. I did manage to overtook soooo many cars though and it was fun. The standard GS to me at least seems faster than the GSA and it was alittle lighter too. So, I know now that this will be my next bike but still undecided about GS or GSA? I like everything about the GS but having the extra fuel capacity would be useful but Ocean BMW says you don't want to carry all that weight around with you - which is a fair point as I will mostly be using it for weekly rideouts not world tours.

GS Screen
Based on what I've read about the GS screen I was suprised that it did a good job protecting me from most of the wind. Not sure I would upgrade the screen unless I knew 100% that it would be better unless it was a smoked screen which looks very good! If I remember right, when riding the GSA, I could lift my visor whilst riding and it didn't seem windy, lift my visor whilst on the GS and it was windy. But it was ok with my visor down.

GS Seat
Again I was suprised how comfy the standard seat was considering most people complain about it but I think that was about the GSA seat. My bum after 2 hours was on the numb side but it wasn't too bad.

Motorways/Dual Carriage Ways
I rode up to 90-95mph for very short bursts on the odd occasion but was keeping it for the most part below 5000rpm. Mostly rode about 80-85mph. The vibration I previously mentioned (I was concerned about) is just the engine droning away. It's not as smooth as my RD350 but I can live with that - it was not a problem today!

Weight
The bike on this occasion had a full tank of fuel and by the time I did 130 miles it was on about half a tank. It was good to ride with a full tank as it gave me an idea of bike wight and it was ok and noticeably lighter than the GSA with only 3rd of a tank of fuel. Having said that I did feel at first that the front wheel could slide away easier than being on a GSA because it felt lighter on the front - am I right about this?

Height
Sitting on this bike puts you up above most cars and that was a great feeling. It also allows you to see further ahead also!

Acceleration / Speed
Well, I know this bike does not have a power band like my RD but there are burst of extra power at certain speeds and revs which makes this bike fun to ride and great for overtaking!

Sound
Stationery the bike sounds like a sowing machine. Open it up and it roars with plenty of grunt. Not sure if it needs to have an exhaust or silencer upgrade?

Reliability
Spoke to the salesman about this. Same one that I've been dealing with all along. Told him my concerns about the bikes reliability and he just shrugged it off saying no worst that other brands. Told him about the fuel controller thing and he didn't seem to make a big deal of it or even know about the many complaints I came accross. I got the feeling that this bike is reliable yet some do fail as you would expect - but no more or less than others?

Decision Time
Well I don't have to decide today, but I'm still undecided about the two bikes GS vs GSA, colours, alloys vs spoked wheels, touring boxes etc. This could take some time to decide but I plan to visit the NEC in November to see if there is something new for the 2009 models?. But If I'm right about the GS being faster then I will more than likely get that one! I just wish they still made the GS in that nice bright RED. I am currently saving up £3000 for a deposit. I don't see the point buying a new bike just before coming into Winter even though I really want one now! I'm also off the road waiting for my RD350R to have new pistons fitted. I was told it would be done Thur/Fri, then Sat now been told it will be Monday!!!:spitfire

Buy New vs Buy Second Hand
Second hand is a little cheaper and it might mean I could buy sooner but I want the peace of mind of a longer warranty and I would only get 3 months if I bought second hand. There are two GS's second hand near me, both going for about £8000 or just over with low mileage on both. But second hand means they lack the extra electrics and the 105bhp found in the 08 models. I guess I prefer to buy new!

So my verdict on this bike based on my ride today is 10 out of 10. Needless to say that I now have no intention of test riding other bikes.

Gs or GSA?

I've had both and one thing the GSA has that was lacking with the GS is that it feels more planted at all speeds on the M Way all year round. Regarding resale the GSA is a better bet as there are less for sale. I've just sold mine privately and have done very well (new one is a week away from delivery). The GSA's weather protection is better, so much so that I actually look forward to going out on it in all weathers. My other bike is an 08 Blade and that is silky smooth, agile, comfortable for a sports bike and is probably one of the best to ride but only when the weather is good. If you can afford it go for a new GSA. There said it, my pennys worth! :beerjug:

Since my last post I was convinced about the GS being my next bike. Since then and having read more about the bike and spoke to some friends who don't like the bike I have my doubt again which has lead me to look at other bikes. Don't get me wrong as I look at other bikes I am comparing them to the BMW GS. Main two issues are reliability and cost. I'm starting to look at the Honda VFR800, XJR1300, Honda CB1300 & Buell Ulysis at the moment. My heart wants a GS or GSA but my head is rationalising the cost and reliability.

I had a loan of a Yamaha XJR1300 and rode it to Wymouth on Sunday to see the motorcross on the beach. Went with two friends - B-King & Blade 900 and although my cautious riding kept me safe through the A roads I had lots of fun on the duel carriage ways and at one point lost them both doing about 100mph only to find that they don't like going past 80mph on open roads as to avoid police problems - stupid me :blast

In that case I wouldn't bother then, I'd go Jap.........:augie

Guess a BMW forum isnt the best place to really probe, many on here will poopoo you if you criticise their bikes ( although not directly theirs:augie)
I find my BMW heavy, 1150 GSA, and vibey above 80, but 80 is max that I really fancy cruising at over here. That is 76mph on GPS screen. Its a funny bike that some days I love and some does dont feel the love:rolleyes:

Your right some people get really funny don't they? Thing is when it costs 11-12K to buy it's important to make sure you have no doubts - I'm just airing my doubts in the hope people will reassure me not criticise me for having doubts!

I'm up and down about the BMW. I test rode a Buell Ulysis 07 on Saturday and was blown away by how powerful it was. WAY more bottom end than the BMW. Came away thinking I could afford this now! Then the doubts came back - but it's not a BMW, it's not as tall, it doesn't have petrol range, ABS, electronic suspension, gear indication, all of which I've come to love about the BMW. Spoke to a GS owner today and he has a 08 model and he loves it. He previously had a 07 last year but his fuel controller cause him to break down. BMW told him the new 08 model has a different design so he part ex to 08 just for that reason alone. He started the bike up and although it didn't have the Buell grunt, it did sound very nice! BMW is still at the top of my list followed by a close 2nd to the Buell. All other bikes are a very distant third - but I still love my RD350 YPVS!!

Why is that? I hope to ride to scotland and that will require motorway riding?

Just done both - going up barely touched a motorway - Peak District, Dales, A6, etc. Coming back had to be quick and belted down the M6 - very boring. 08 1200GSA handled both with aplomb so yes it will do Motorways; it's my mind that struggles.

GSA has better screen imo - not RT type protection but no buffeting.

Reliability - there are only really 2 show stoppers - Ring antenna - this appears to now be cured but check if mod done if you do buy 2nd hand. Fuel pump controller - still a fairly regular occurrence even if quite rare. Pragmatic solution is carry a spare (I borrowed a spare from my dealer whilst I was on hols, the rest of the time I'll take my chances and rely on BM recovery if needs be).

Other reported problems tend to be irritating niggles or very rare.

You're right to be cautious when looking to purchase a GS or indeed any BMW. In the same way you'd be cautious before buying anything that cost 10k plus.

I can see where you're coming from with the Buell. I really like the look of the XT version of the Ulysees with hard luggage, taller screen and heated grips. My biggest reservation would be the resale value as I've heard that the Ulysees drops value rather rapidly.

Having said that BMWs aren't the rock-solid depreciation-proof certainty that some would have you believe.

Ultimately the BMW is a bike you will almost certainly fall more in love with as time goes by. I suspect with the Buell it'll be the other way around...

Just my though anyway :rob
