The reason (1) we don't see trailers on bikes is because they are almost exclusively American, very large and almost always twin wheel. An articulated vehicle pulling a trailer (which a motorcycle is) that attaches behind the rear axle is a potential nightmare. A single wheel that leans with the bike allows luggage to be carried along the boring ride to the tour area then leave it (locked up) at base and tour with the bike unencumbered as it should be.

The reason (2) is that a large percentage of bikers have very narrow views about what's "right". To them a Hossack or BMW Telelever and other "funny" front ends just cant be right. So don't expect any out of the box thinking.
 
My mate uses a trailer behind his Tenere 660. He has 2x 60 litre panniers on the bike, a pillion sat behind him, and two mountain bikes on the trailer.
He's had a few frightening moments, but reckons he's got it sussed now.
He's a very big and strong chap BTW.
I've suggested he gets a car licence ;-)

He absolutely needs a car. That's exactly the sort of bike trailer to cause real problems and it's well over the weight limits.
 
Touratech built him a one-off shock. Everyone else said it couldn't be done!

Single wheel trailers are a pain to load: falling over all over the place. They need proper sized wheels too, but that makes them very long. They also put much of the weight into the towing vehicles rear wheel: that can be good or bad!

They need 20% weight on the tow hitch 80% on the trailer whee. The box in front type will put more weight forwards than ideal. UniGo get a good balance but silly money. Those with box under wheel should balance the weight better. They all need a fold up legs/stand for parking without the bike. If the bike can't be hauled off its stand with trailer attached the whole plot is too heavy (obviously) but probably dangerously as well.
