I've just noticed a streak of oil on my right cylinder head.

There is no obvious sign of where it came from.

The bike is 2 weeks old and has 300 miles on it.

Are such streaks common on these tractor engines ?

Hi

Does it start on that web or is it from above?

I hav'nt got the stain on mine but then again its got so much crap on it you would'nt see it anyway :D

I'd wipe it off, then keep an eye on it, could have been there from assembly then dribbled down :nenau

Get that bike dirty :thumb

I wiped it off and have done about 50 miles since, just playing around locally and it hasn't returned,so guess it may have been there from new etc.

These things do burn oil though.

My bike has 333 miles on clock and the sight glass is about 2/3 full.

I'll def take some with me if I get to Spain and back in a couple of weeks.

But how much do you top up by ?

Say the sight glass shows only 1/3 full, you chuck some oil in-will it show the new level in the window within a few minutes ?

(Never had a bike that noticeably burned oil between services !!)

I think it's 0.5l from bottom to top of sight glass and 1l per 1,000 miles is 'acceptable'. Give it ten minutes to settle on centre stand after it reaches full temp and don't over fill it. It's best to get an average rather than top up every time it appears low as these things don't always show accurate levels consistantly.

If this fails RTFM :D

No more than 100ml at a time, IMHO :thumb

Well said :thumb
My 1200ADV has required a quarter of a litre in "top ups" over 3 thousand miles since the 600 mile service, which is a hell of a lot less than the 1150 used

I've found the trip computors oil level warning device handy, seems to operate when the oil level is in the bottom third of the site glass.

My GSA did'nt burn any oil untill around 1000mls and I have used 3/4 ltr since then
5000mls

The consumption is similar to the other two 1200's i've had, i'm sure it burns a bit of oil from the start, but with gentle use (running in) and a 600 service to top it all up again, the oil consumption is hidden until around 1000mls.

My first 1200 stopped burning oil at 12,000mls the second was heading in a similar direction before i p/ex'd it at 10,000 ish

Good info guys.

Thanks again.

Just a small point-everybody refers to the '600 mile service' but the manual for my GSA says that the first service should be done between 500 and 1200 km,so between about 310 and 700 miles which seems very flexible !!

Mine is being done next week and will probably only have about 450 miles on it by then,as I hope to take it down to Spain the following week when I get back from work.

Yep it is flexible, but make sure you get the service before you go then you can start to "give it sum" while youre away :D , the 600 service (i think) allows them to re torque the cyl heads and adjust the valve clearances, cahange the oil and filter as well, just to prepare the bike for future misuse

Have a great trip, and don't worry about us poor sods stuck at work :o
