Looking for a Norge as I fancy a change and like the look and the apparent build quality. Does anyone have any tips or advice about dos and donts when it comes to year/model etc. Im totally new to Guzzi

The Norge was on my list of bikes to buy recently but I went for a 2007 Breva 1100 in the end.

There was a big update to the Norge in 2011 so go for a post 2011 bike if you can.

How tall are you, the seat is very low.

Mmmm im 6ft 2ins tall Perhaps the seat height may be too short for me !

Is there not a high seat option? The standard doesn't sound too bad at 810mm (~32"). I was well impressed with the engine in a demo Stelvio I rode at the Dent weekend.

I test rode one.I am 5'7 and loved the detailing. Too cramped though and in first it was a bit too lumpy and unwieldly around town. But once you hit the open roads ...what an engine! But I felt cramped on it too. knees to chin for you |I think. Anyhow, crossed it off my list at least.

Be careful of the 4 valvers - make sure all recall work has been done and they are fitted with roller cams - earlier versions sometimes disassembled! I had a 2 valver for 3 years which was good mechanically but a bit softly sprung for extended 2 up and luggage work - and that was with uprated rear spring. Quality of build was OK apart from melting headlight surrounds. I'm 6ft 2in and seat height was OK. It was registered '08 but was a '06 (first year) so was short on development. Panniers rubbish. Have 3 round barrel 70's Guzzis in garage which I much prefer! Before I get labelled as a classic rider, I do have a KTM 1190 and a Serow too!

So what are the model years of 2 valvers and 4 valvers ??? From which model years did they get everything sorted ???

all 4 valvers have roller cams , melting h/light surrounds ? panniers are shit, your pillion obviously has a FAT arse !

( hello Robin ! )

Didn't the roller cam followers make an appearance circa 2013 in the four valve heads? I know the Stelvio and Griso four valve motors were originally flat tappet and some of the early engines up to about 2011 had issues. There was originally a factory recall on the early four valve motors to have cams and followers replaced.
I don't think any particular reason was found to cause the failures, there was speculation that some oils being used had insufficient ZDDP additive, it was also mooted that condensation in cylinder heads was another cause, another was that the 6000 mile oil change interval was too short ( I changed mine at 3k on both Stelvios), perhaps a combination of all those :nenau
Great bikes though, I had the use of a Norge for day and liked it very much, it felt smaller but a lot more manageable to ride than my Stelvio at low speeds.

8v/4v same things . personally i wouldn't touch an 8v that didn't have rollers . the cost of fixing it is approx. £1200 IN PARTS .

there have been 3 different versions of followers/cams . the only ones 100% reliable are rollers.

there have been 2 oil pumps .

if the cams/followers go , even an oil flush doesn't get all the bits out. ( first one i ever did , the sump was soooo clean it was suspicious ! )

changing the oil at 3k is always going to help.

are you using 10/60 ?

failure mileages .

Griso 3-5k mls , these bikes are used mainly round town

1200 Sport 4-10 k mls used in and out of town

Stelvio 10 k upwards used mainly out of town

here is MY experience of why they go .

i worked on a stelvio with an oil pressure gauge ....
cold start 80+ psi , test ride 6 miles , back in w/shop 20 psi , fiddle with oil pressure relief valve

cold start 90 psi , test ride back to w/shop 22 psi . NOT GOOD . i expect to see a min of 55-60 psi hot .

.

i go and meet a man in a pub 50 miles away , he tells me a story of BMW 1200lc pre-production with same problem .

H-D had a similar problem

he works for a reputable company that solves problems for manufacturers .

he asks what i do to ease the problem , i tell him , he agrees that what i do helps , but will never solve it.

oil takes 20 seconds to get from sump to rocker arms , i checked this for myself.

condensation, i don't think is a factor , oil temperature IS .

look at early and late stelvio's , oil cooler size went up 50% ......

the problem is going away slowly , but last week i did a Griso with 9k mls on the clock , i measured the clearances with ...a screwdriver .

8v/4v= 8v in total or 4/side
2v = 2 / side
