H.I.D lamps

I'm up for 'half a one' for my 12 if anyone wants to share :beerjug: - + anyone fit these near sheffield??

T>

P.S> is it the same for the low and high beam bulbs??
I find dip only (at least on the 1150) is enough. However if both dip and main are lit at the same time I guess it would work without worries about strike times ... :thumb

Picture of the bulb fitting in the 1150 cap, pressed the two silver pins out then fitted the grommet and then pressed the pins back in over the grommet, only replaced the very small female spade for a standard size one, if its pressed a little tight it will clip to a small male (earth on the light unit) no problem if you have to put the o/e bulb back in.

On the 1200 I have taken a feed wire from the bulb plug and fed it back through one of the breather ports, so even when the battery is low and the HID does not kick in you can use the drive lamps, same as if it's a bulb failure.
Even though the Canbus shows the bulb is at fault the power still goes to the plug.

I can always fit you one if you want and yes both bulbs the same.

do the "bulbs" on HID units need replacing like a tungsten filament, and if one goes in the middle of nowhere can they be replaced easily?

does one carry a spare or an ordinary bulb to get you home?

Life expectancy on a HID burner is over 3000 hours (up to 10 times longer than Halogen bulbs). That should get you at least 100,000 miles.

100,000 miles in 3000 hours..............33.33 MPH average? You ride too slow :D :D :D :D :D

Yep DD ... you have to do the fogs now .... you know its the manly thing to do!

Hey Walt, I know you're right mate, two more 'nuke' explosions on the front of the bike makes perfect sense...

Still not sure about doing main beam though, where I live is pretty damn dark. I can't imagine the bulb coming up to temperature with continuous quick flicks on main beam when I'm deer spotting on the way home...:nenau

Im sold on H.I.D Lights, but i just cant seem to buy any!!! can anyone please advise on the most suitable kit for the GS1200 ADV. has it the smallest Ballasts, and waterproof and Where i can buy it ?.
Is it best just to replace high beam,or the low beam or both, whack one in the aux light left side right side........ please show me the light!!!

If your fitting to the 1150 here is a good spot, other than that you have to stash a box somewhere ;)

My 1150 has head and dip HID from HIDS4U and I fitted one ballast each side of the headstock under the fuel tank.

A couple of images are elswhere on this forum.

Once it's been used for a few seconds, even if you have to switch it off for an oncoming car, it will re-strike at very close to full power immediately. Even on first use the immediate light output is probably greater than that of an H1 halogen.

I regularly ride on what are considered country "A" roads here in Scotland which are much like "C" roads in the south. They are unlit and have enough traffic that you are regularly putting on high beam and then swiching it off again. You soon get used to the minute delay as it strikes and in fact you just switch a fraction earlier to take account of it. I'm sure someone, probably Colebatch, more knowledgeable on the technical side will tell you what the expected number of strikes for a system will be.

As for me, even if I had to replace the lamp and ballast every year, I would consider it money well spent just for the safety of actually being able to see where you are going at night.

Restrike

DD ... Packer is right ... once you have the high beam on, there is no delay turning it back on after dipping it ... if its off for more than 5 mins, there will be a delay, but just dipping for 20 secs for oncoming traffic seems to result in immediate full power being restored

Lots of questions ....

(1) "Where to buy it" ... flipfly can get you a pair of 35 watt units for about £80 plus postage ... I can get you a pair of 50 watt units for £140 plus postage ... or you can buy from HIDs4U on the net for about £200 plus postage for 35 watt units. All the above have waterproof ballasts. HIDs4U get them to you pretty much next day ... Flipfly and my contacts will take about 3 weeks. 50 watt ballasts are slightly larger than 35 watt ballasts

(2) "Is it best just to replace high beam,or the low beam or both" ... I say both. Others have done low beam only. I personally swear by doing both. But there are different opinions.

(3) "whack one in the aux light left side right side". ... yes to both of those as well. ... those are H11s on the 1200, while the main and dipped beam on the 1200 are H7s ... so a pair of H7s and a pair of H11s will do all 4 lights

Packer wrote of the high beam HID:- "You soon get used to the minute delay as it strikes ".
I hope that's 'minute' as in small, and not 'minute' as in 60 seconds? (laugh)

Thanks for you reply, a couple of questions, if i replaced all 4 light should i need the 35w or the 50w . if i fit them in the aux light can the ballast get fixed under the front beak. When i bought my gsa in june last year the fitters at Cannon BMW had problems with the canbus wiring throughing up warning signals when they tried HID lights, have you heard of any problems with this latest generation of HID ballasts thanks Bryan

just a quick note

Don't try to extend the leads on a HID, I was speaking to a guy here at Bentley and he was telling me they did it at Merc and the result from the rf output set off every airbag in the car. I know your gs ain't got airbags but think about the microwaved knackers you'll get

I know of 3 1200 running HID now. 2 show no CANBUS warning light and one does. The solution is a resistor but can't advise what size.....sorry :nenau
