H.I.D lamps

There is a great relatively inexpensive bike sparky near Croydon who has fitted, refitted, played around with my HIDs extensively.

PM me for more details ... if going to South London isnt too much of a hike for you.

I have an 07 GSA and being a complete numpty with all things electrical/mechanical/female I've read through the last 7 pages of threads with excitment and dread.

I could really do with updating my lights (they really are crap) but have no idea how to go about it.

Do any of techy people offer a service where I can turn up on my bike, pay some cash and ride away with it all done and dusted? Upgrading the exisiting lights would be a first step or, if necessary buying into an additional set (to compete or repalce the BMW fog lights).

I did email BTBR but he's only just completed his first GS and the Adventure is some way off.

I live near Oxford but can travel. Cash and adulation is waiting.

Any help much appreciated.

Mark.

bring it up to Worcs and I'll stick an HID unit on your bike for nothing, it ain't no big deal. You buy the kit and I'll fit it. Scroll back and click on the ebay link I pasted in. You need an H7 6000k kit.

I fitted a HID to my 05 1200GS last night. It took about 1 hour including faffing around with bits of bent metal to fashion a bracket to hold the ballast. I have fitted the ballast vertically behind the tank cover but since it is a large ballast you can see it as it protrudes beyond the lip of the plastics and there is not much clearance between it and the forks. Mine had the grommet included and I just cut the spade connectors off, threaded the supply cables through and remade the connectors with the spare spades supplied. The hardest part was persuading the assembled connectors into the back of the headlamp housing so that I could fit the cover back on, but patience was rewarded. It was too late last night for pictures :D :D

I got my HIDs from here

They came in 24 hours!!

Hi
The bracket will only fit on the left hand side from the front of the bike.
The right hand side the petrol pump gets in the way & power socket on the GSA.
Will look at making one later for the right hand side.

Comparison 35 vs 50 watt

Here is an interesting article comparing 35 watt HIDs with 50watt. Its actually for conversion kits for light aircraft landing lights and they test 4 or 5 35 watt kits and one 50 watt kit.

http://www.preciseflight.com/ufiles/06March_Aviation_Consumer_HID_Article_Main.pdf

All the 35 watt kits performed similarly, but the 50 watt HID stood out notably.
"The real stunner was XeVision’s 50-watt lamp, whose brightness is best described as stupefying. Our target holder squinted in discomfort as he walked downrange to collect intensity data with the light meter. The 50-watt HID delivered more light at 600 feet than our stock light did at 200 feet."

Oh my God

I have juts fitted one of Colebatches 50W units to my main beam. It is phenonominal, not just in comparison to the 55w standard hlogen, but also compared to the 35W HID I replaced.

Beginning to wish I had done both now !

Done the HID thing on both dip and main beam 35watt ballasts and no bulb failure lights showing. Main beam is immediate (after the first time), no delay and kin bright.......result.

Now the question is what does one replace the side light bulb with? - it looks really yellow now (as did the full beam until I change it) :clap

Now you need a white LED W5W unit with 4 LEDs

They are typically at 6500K and a much closer colour match than anything else. The problem is they draw sweet FA in terms of current, so you end up getting the LAMPF warning permanently on ... I am currently debating whether or not its worth sticking a 5 watt resistor in there as well, or whether I just live with the LAMPF permanently on.

Get them on ebay here:

Dont make the mistake I made when first fitting LED bulbs ... unlike normal bulbs (which you can pass the current through the bulb in either direction) the LEDS only work one way around. I threw out half of a pack first time I tried a bunch of them out ... before realising that if they dont work one way round, flip them over and fit them the other way and hey presto.

Did that one with the power supply to the ballast on the HID until I realised. As the HIDs haven't tripped the bulb check circuit I may pass on the LEDs, I'll go and have a look in the local "chav" car shop and see what they have to offer.

Hello!

Hello, just checking my stats and found this link to my page, so thought I would pop by and say 'hello'

FYI, as mentioned if you are confident you can simply fit a resistor across each light, or there are resistor kits available that simply 'scotch-lock' into place, these are 25 Ohm, 25 Watt Load Resistor kits.

The majority of LED W5W lights are polarized, so always try turning them around :) although non-polarized version are also availble, normally in 6-LED W5W, depending on the space they are filling other options include using T-10 (slightly larger) lights as they still fit the 10mm base

All the best
David

Me please

Hi Colebatch

Do you have 2 H1s (50w, 5000K) and the ballasts for an 1150 left? Might as well do dipped and main :bounce1

This mod is the answer.:D :D :D
Do I have to become a site sponsor or can you just mail me at Boxergs at Tiscali.co.uk ?

Dirtydog,

Can I be next in the queue for fitting please?:thumb2 Would pay a reasonable rate:beerjug: :beerjug:

Thanks guys for a great thread:bow

I've just finished installing 50W HID H7's to the Dim and Main of my 1200GS (Colbatch supplied). It was a bit of a faff getting the ballasts to fit vertically behind the side panels (I think that the 50W ballasts are bigger than those for the 35W version).

I've not taken it out yet to see what they are like, but looked plenty bright in the garage!

More info later.

How did you mount the 50w ballast?, just made a bracket for a 35w one :)

Les,
Basically the same as your bracket - I bought the professionally made ones from the US (can't remember the name of the company), but then had to chop them around a bit to make the 50W ballast fit. Not bad to do, only took a little while (I took some pics, so could upload them later).
I wanted them behind the tank panels since I'm going to HID the Hella Micro DE's and will fit thouse ballasts under the beak.
Cheers,
Dave.
