handgrips and mirrors

I need to change my grips and would like to know any tips as i've never done it with heated grips before, also dont want to use genuine as there nearly $400 aus a pair. someone told me to get 2 sets of universal grips and use the throttle grips? Also my mirror stalks are badly corroded on the fronts and look like shite so was wondering if anyone has replaced with anything non original as i'd hate to ask the cost of genuine bmw. Thanks in advance, this site is the best for info. Gibbo

You can actually use more or less any grips, as long as you have two sets so you can just use the throttle-side ones.

And despite what MikeO says, mine are not bright yellow - they are Kawasaki green.

Mine cost £1 a pair from the parts bin at Beaulieu.

Grips

Easy to do but use a pair of side cutters to cut the old rubber grip off, if you use a knife you might damage the heating wires. You will need two pairs as youe need two throttle grips (bigger to over the heated bits).

The hairspray trick works a treat too. Replaced the grips on my '01GS a few months ago and it was a really easy job thanks to MikeO's excellent ADV Rider thread.

They won't be called grips any more. Slips, maybe. Especially when they get wet.

Just done my mirror stalks after 6 years of flies and other assorted insect life caused them to pit and corrode.
Take 'em off the bike, mask the plastic bits, rub down with fine wet & dry, spray with Hammerite Smooth Black (3 coats should be fine), remove masking tape, re-fit. Mine look like new again. Hammerite is the dogs for side and centre stands, if they're looking second hand too.

My vote for the 2 x pairs from Motorworks for about 21 quid and use the 2 larger inside diameter ones.They also look like the original BM ones.
For the mirrors,clean with rust killer/emery and then rattle can them.
Jobs a good 'un.

well yeah why would we . Winter is coming on -we get about 6 weeks where the night drops to about 5` celsius but the days are about 20`celsius. Tough isnt it , but i use em cause i can and i'm old. Thanks for all your help. Gibbo-( deported from Covenrty at age 3)

Brilliant links - my grips are very worn and have been putting off replacement, thinking would have to buy new heated grips. Have just ordered grips from Motorworks and shall be setting about them this weekend!
