Hi
I've been looking at a getting a Harley and all the one's I've seen so far are quite highly modified, how do you go about insuring the things?

Telling the insurance company about all mods....if they suck their breath through their teeth.....fuck them off.....if they ask sensible questions....talk to them. Mine were not fazed by the feckin' big engine...but insisted on an excess for the paintwork......seemed reasonable to me.......

three things .
1 dont buy a highly modified one .
2 dont tell them .
3 go to carol nash they werent to fussed about my changes as they saw them as mostly cosmetic .

HD Carol Nash will cover you mods and all , agreed valuation kit up to 1200
breakdown cover ( never used it yet) not the cheapest but can't knock the cover .

Hello

If CN don't come up trumps then by all means DM me. We do like for like cover on mods inc Stage1, forward controls etc etc, the more mods the merrier. We can also offer agreed value.

Thanks

One thing to watch...

Last year I swapped my BMW K1600 for an Harley Davidson Heritage Softail Classic.

My K1600 was insured with BMWs own insurance. When I swapped bikes I had just 2 months to go until the policy expired and I earned another year no claim discount. In other words I was in month 10 of the current years insurance.

BMW wouldn't insure the Harley, they said they only insure BMWs. They said the only thing I could do was to cancel the policy and lose out a years NCD for the sake of two months.

The moral, if you insure with a manufacturers insurance scheme such as the Harley Davidson insurance which is by Carol Nash, make sure they will still insure you if you change to a different make bike.

Or don't change until the old policy has ended.

Sorted through Bikesure, painless enough, don't know if there was a UKGSER discount or not but the price was ok.

I have an Electra Glide and a GS. Both are insured with Harley Davidson Insurance (CN) on the same policy. The main bike on the policy is the Harley with the BMW as an add on.

Thanks, that's good to know.. Although I wonder if they would still insure you if you got rid of the Harley?

My ins renewal is coming up. I'm currently with MCE, I've heard good things about Bikesure, such as no extra charge for mods, stage 1, etc. and GSER discount.

Bikeshure just asked what kind of mods it had but didn't ask for specifics, they wanted to know if it was stage 1 and what I thought the value was. For no claims they gave me 40 percent for my full no claims on my gsa policy.

For no claims they gave me 40 percent for my full no claims on my gsa policy.

Only 40 percent ?.. They should give you at least 60 percent if you had full no claims on a previous policy.

Or do you mean you have another policy currently running for your GSA which they allowed 40 percent NCD on. Wouldn't a multi bike policy be cheaper?

There's always a catch with insurance companies. I rode for 20 years+ without building up any NCD because I was on a company motor traders policy who didn't give any NCD discount. (Before that I had my own policy but lost the full 60 percent NCD when going on the trade policy). When the company closed down just a couple of years ago I had to start again at the beginning with no NCD because I couldn't prove anything. I would now have 3yrs if it wasn't for BMW insurance costing me a year by not covering my Harley for just 2 months.

Btw, my renewal is due end of May. I've not heard anything from MCE yet. I'm sure I read somewhere that insurers must contact policyholders a month before renewal to advise the renewal cost and provide proof of NCD etc, in order for policyholder to shop around etc. maybe this has changed again?
.

Yes I have another policy running on my GSA at £90 fully comp, so they allowed me 40% on a new policy on the Harley, I will try for a multi bike policy next year.
