Harmonisor throttle body/carb balancing guages now available.

They are going to try and add VAT onto the value the goods are shipped at. Last time I discussed this with the posties they said anything over £18 in value is going to get VAT added to it. If the shipment comes in via a carrier linked to the post office you just get left a note saying the goods are at so and so and you need to pay xyz to get them. If the goods go via a shipping agent it will end up in some customs bonded warehouse somewhere who will then have to contact the end customer to arrange payment and subsequent shipment.

I'm not an expert but in my experience, goods shipped via UPS in the US have always come via the UK Post Office service and its relatively quick and easy to go and get the goods from the local office and pay the VAT. Usually 7 days from shipment in the US to collecting from a post office.

There's a thread elsewhere in this forum regarding throttle body balancing talking of having to 'lock the stepper motors' before balancing can take place?

Is this the case? How does one do this? Does it hurt? and is it a process compatable with this harmoniser?

Hello sir,
On the newish R1200 BMW's the idle bypass air is controlled by the ecu via stepper motors. This means the idle speed and balance can't be mechanically adjusted.

The higher-RPM balance is still done by cable adjustments.
Although the stepper motors are always making adjustments, they have very little effect at higher RPM.

When I balance an R1200 I check the idle balance to make sure it's within 25mbar of zero, and then adjust the high RPM balance at 4,000 RPM.

I do this without locking or disconnecting the stepper motors.

I have also done it by disconnecting the stepper motors before starting the motor (effectively parking them), and by parking the stepper motors using the GS-911. I could not tell any difference in the higher RPM balance.

If the idle balance is not within 25mBar of zero, there are many possible causes. Below are a couple of links to some "light reading".

Hopefully mine will arrive soon. I had a delivery from Cycleworks arrive two days ago, that was posted on the 16th,

Grok,

Why don't you set Steptoe up as your UK agent? we could then have the units posted out using a recorded service. We seem to have a major problem in the UK with theft and damage of posted items that pass through the Birmingham sorting office at least if it's recorded the parcel will be trackable.

I hope yours arrives soon as well!
I am currently in an introductory phase at a slightly discounted price. The introductory period will end September 1. I will then be reviewing dealer inquiries. Steptoe has expressed interest in carrying the Harmonizer in the UK. I'm looking forward working with him!

Sorry this is a bit off the point...................

Being an old git used to carburettor tuned bikes I do dislike the high idle speed on the 1200GS (08).

I was told that it cannot be set lower, that there is no tolerance. Is that correct as I would ideally like it not be above 1,000 revs.

It's my understanding that tickover cannot be adjusted by mechanical or electronic means. The ECU varies the idle speed with temperature (like a choke) and compensates for altitude and other variables. I think it also makes an attempt at heating the O2 sensors and the catalytic converter fairly quickly for emissions reasons.

Just had a play with mine setting up my 1150, its really good. Without doubt the quickest and clearest way to set the balance (I have a twinmax and carbtune, both now for sale :)).

Thanks Grok but let's hold fire for another week. If it comes to it send one to Steptoe and I'll pay for recoded delivery from there. Hopefully it will turn up though.

I agree, it's difficult to imagine. But please be patient young Jedi. All will be revealed. I wish I could give up more detailed information right now, but there are potential competitors lurking about.

I can say the Quartet will have a 2-cylinder mode that exactly mimics the Harmonizer. In 3 and 4 cylinder modes there will be display choices, depending on your preference.

It will remember your settings to minimize mucking about.

can I have the first 4 cylinder one, I regulary have twins triples and fours to balance :thumb2

Good news! Mine arrived today. The bad news is it was picked up by customs. I've had a £14 fee to pay (£6 customs, £8 Royal mail) :(

Just set my airhead carbs up. my Carbtunes spot on according to your unit which is nice to know. The Harmonizer is extremely easy to use and makes balancing the carbs a breeze. The gauge feature is a nice touch as well. excellent. Thanks

harmonizer

Just ordered on-hope it can help me to get a decent balance and 'tickover' as I never could with my Twinmax.

Hello sir,
The Twinmax needle whacks back and forth fairly violently at idle. In the Harmonizer, I put a lot of work into digital filters so that the idle readings are stable yet responsive, and easy to "dial in".

I don't want to bash the Twinmax too much. I've actually used one for a while. Used properly with a fresh battery it yields decent results.

But I think (humble Grok opinion) the Harmonizer is in a different class.
Thanks for the order! It will go out today.
