Has anyone dropped one yet?

Nope, they're not immaculate - but you be surprised how hard a hit they can take before cracking. Pretty sure they're also cheaper to replace than crashbars.

Crash bars can (by no means always) result in flipping the bike during a crash and far from guarantee protecting your rockers. I took my crash bars off when they sheared the bolt out of the engine casing.

What bars did you have? Mine came fitted by BMW (along with just about every other option-I had money in those days) Bike is 2003 1150GS -the standard one not the posers adventure model.

They came on the bike when I bought it secondhand... maybe Wunderlich?

Agreed. Crash bars may focus the impact forces where you don't want them. Carry some JBWeld with you in case you crack or hole the cover.

I vaguely recall BMW selling a rubber cover emergency repair kit for the cover intended to get you home should you crack or hole one. Or did that come standard with the HP?
 
The standard BMW crash bars save my bacon and the bike in the south of France last Summer - a deer ran out from the forest without warning as I was doing about 50mph on a country road - it went straight into my left side crash bar which span the deer like a top in the road - I had a bit of a wobble and recovered - if the crash bars weren't there it would most likely have hit my leg or even gone under the back wheel - crash bars were written off but the bike and me were totally undamaged.

Pretty sure you can still get the replacement cover kit - never heard of it being supplied with the HP tho.

Got one in my garage, drop in the bottom on pannier just in case on long trips along with the kitchen sink and everything else :D.

I think he was day dreaming that one day he would ride a motorbike!

Showed the video to the police after the Harley rider started making noises about being cut up-Never seen a bigger grin on our local copper's face as he set of to tell the Harley man he was going to be prosecuted.

John-who needed a large whisky when the film was first shown, I think I swapped DNA with the biker coming the other way!
