Head stock failure?

i've always assumed it was ironic.

Indeed.

Of all the bikes that this shouldn't happen to, surely the latest flagship GS is the one?

People have been doing stuff as in the posted photo's with GS'es ever since the airhead days.

And of course 1150's occasionally used snap subframes and 1100's had subframe to gearbox mounting issues (both very rare but it did happen). However that was 15-20 years ago - that's what 'learning from your mistakes' (or 'continuous improvement' if you want to be modern and trendy) is all about.

Even more laughable than the headstock falling apart are the serial BMW apologists who as with the threads concerning the gearbox / clutch issues (and others), don their blinkers and blame it on the person riding it...

Pardon my ignorance , are you telling me that the new 1200GS is less able than the old 1200GS :nenau?

I'm not saying that, but looking at the pictures, and some of the guys posts on FB, it's clear that he's not blessed with much common sense.:comfort

For all I know, the new GS may not be as able as the old model; I for one will not be using this chaps techniques to find out!:P

Oh dear oh dear, I doubt the bike is being dead dropped vertically from 10 foot up in the air. Otherwise those blokes who do 200 foot jumps on dirt bikes would be flat. :D

Let alone several hundred tons of Jumbo jet on landing.

Lets not forget that BMW do have their own off-road testing ground in Wales, where standard bikes are hammered bloody hard every day by novices who drop them regularly and run the cylinder heads into rocks and stumps etc and yet the bikes apparently stand up to it very well. If there was an inherent issue I feel sure that it would have shown up in Wales by now.

GS's are tough bikes, however even tough bikes can break sometimes if treated really badly, be good to know it's history.

:

They are very professional looking images, almost out of the WMB promotional back catalogue

Nah ........ they chopped the top of his head off ..... very amateurish .... :D :D

This guy is clearly a competent rider with his extreme antics. To me it would make sense for BMW USA to use him to help promote the GS range. Some kind of light touch sponsorship deal as a minimum, and maybe some demos at dealers etc. You'd think BMW would look after him as folks like that can be really good for a brand. It certainly does seem that the WC is less of a stunt bike than the old GS, not that it bothers you or I !

Check out this vid with his Warn Winch mounted to the back of the GS !

Fuck me!

Something as basic as that failing on a bike that's supposed to be an all round package designed to go all around the world with all round blokes on top of them?

I wouldn't ever trust one again.......how can you sleep at night having seen that?

Take them all back to your dealers.....they are patently NOT fit for purpose......Rust and corrosion on the casings of a three week old toilet is one thing, but a catastrophic failure of a safety critical frame part like the headstock?

Good luck, suicide jockeys :thumb2

:augie

I'm no engineer, but if that's not faulty welding then dip me in chocolate and call me the Easter bunny!

Do they make these in China? :nenau

Oh no!
So now I'm going to lie awake at night in a pool of sweat worrying that the headstock might fail at any moment!
......and there is only one set of tyre pressures recommended for all situations!
......and the clutch is a bit dodgy if I put too much oil in the engine!
......and the casings might rust!
......and it might tank slap at any moment coz I've got no damper fitted!
.......and it might be running a bit lean!

No wait a moment, it can't be running lean as I've been up to Geoff at Hilltop :D
Thank God for that ...... I'd better get out and ride the bugger then coz life's too short to be worrying all the time.

Have a great weekend ya all and enjoy your bike, whichever one it is you own!
