Late last night had the dreaded snapped wire in the ignition switch loom.

The loom was nice and loose not caught on anything.

Into bed at 3.30am after RAC recovery!

Checked this morning and two wires just snapped.

All the wires seem very brittle, is this just a sign of old age?

Has any one changed all of them for softer wiring?

Anyone know if its easy to get into the bottom of the ignition switch and solder from there.

The switch part is supposed to be easy enough to remove, though I found it difficult and ended soldering in situ, that part of the loom fatiguing is a common problem BMV sell a part, though there are only four wires in there it ought to be a simple repair.

I haven't had this one go yet but I have had a few soldered bits fall apart. It is an age thing.

They are cable tied very tightly from new and the wires flex at the same point for most of their lives.

Fit a new ignition loom ( only requires one small grub screw removing ) and don't cable tie it anywhere. It'll then last the life of the bike.

Ignition Loom

Thanks Steptoe,

I had thought this had been fixed on this bike as this cable was NOT cable tied.

But still snapped two wires.

At least I have found out its easy to get the bit out of switch.

Because it wasn't cable tied doesn't mean it's never been cable tied during it's life.

One of the first things I did (after reading on here) was cut the ties on the headstock of my 1100. The ignition loom was cable tied tight as feck and had been for 14 years...

Sad I know

The Bmw part no you need for the short replacement loom is :-

61 32 2 306 103 Switch

now carry one as a spare

I had the pruple wire break on mine, which luckily isnt used, but also noticed atleast one other was fraying so did a solder job repair. Ive since tie wrapped mine up the headstock so it doesnt move at all.

How much are the replacement switches??

here you go

Moto-bins - BMW Spare Parts and Accessories for Motorcycles ...
www.motobins.co.uk/displayfinal.php?...
Part No.94765. BMW Part No. 61 32 2 306 103. IGNITION SWITCH TO MAIN LOOM WIRING. R850/1100GS/1150GS. R850R/1100R/1150R. £53.50 ex VAT

Gone up by quite a bit since i bought mine

Would be tempted to solder my own repair up first

Loom

Agree Steptoe itcould have been cable tied at some point.

Thanks I already ordered one last night and will replace the wires on the old one and keep as a spare.

Not got time to do decent job right now.

As quoted MotoBins is the cheapest.

Still a lot of money for what it is, but cheaper than some of the other BMW spare places out there.

Wiring Loom

Anyone got pictures of the location of the steering lock locating screw or is it easy to see and get at.

New Loom arrived today, but too dark to see anything.

It's under a blob of red(?) paint on the the ignition barrel. You need to pick the paint out first. There's a small screw under there.

Loom

Loom replaced today, thats a small grub screw.

Will make sure the bike is locked up much better from now on.

How easy have BMW made it to by-pass the ignition switch on the 1150!

When mine failed, I just yanked all the wires out from the connector, twisted the right pair together and rode it home. Bit of a joke really. It had been going wrong intermittently though so at least I knew what the problem was.

I released all the cable ties a couple of years ago on my R850R, they were so tight you could see a bend in the loom that you knew would cause problems.
I also relocated the horn as it was chafing through. I put it under the tank where the ABS unit used to be.

Yerp because they are so easy to hot wire - why not fit a simple immobiliser like a key switch to the fuel pump solenoid mounted in the side of the box below the fuses under seat - or hidden but inconvenient to use. ! Effecively its the same circuit as the kill switch but the battery would be flat by the time they figured it out.
