Headlight adjustment

I´m on the road (Peru) on a trans-Americas ride at present (no manual with me).

I´m getting more and more people flashing me because I´m dazzling them (maybe rear shock´s getting tired after 22,000 loaded miles?). Could someone explain what the 2 adjusters do (one in middle and one on right), and what the correct adjustment is. Sounds simple, but they´re bloody stiff so I´d rather do it right first time rather than trial and error.

Ian,

Keep away from the two adjusters you mentioned.

What you need to do is adjust the gizmo which is at back of light cluster, on centreline of bike. There is a plastic hex head which can be turned by hand for beam height fine adjustment. There is a flip-up /down lever around the hex head which gives two coarse settings, up is normal, down is used when heavily loaded.

Have you tried increasing the rear shock preload?

Is your back tyre near worn out?

Let me know if you need more info,

Rgds

Thanks Bin,

Hardly any flashes yesterday! Had not noticed the flickable thing before (only had the 1200's since May '04!). Rear shock's on max preload.

Although most in these parts think it Very Odd to have a headlight on in daylight, Odd to have one on in poor visibility, but not at all strange to have no lights at all in the pitch black! I think they like to save electricity.

BTW what is the adjuster on the RHS for - direction? I've already fiddled with it previously!

Not sure, bike is at home, but I guess you are right.

Here, when they drive towards you up the wrong side of the dual-carriageway, they like to leave the lights off to avoid frightening you......very hairy at night here in the countryside.

I've got a headlight unit in bits at the moment, and yes the right hand adjuster is for throw left and right. Clockwise will adjust the throw to the right.

Hi hope you don't mind me butting in.

whilst you've got the headlight apart, have you seen any way to adjust the hi beem seperately from the low beem. Is this possible?

Cheers Val.

Yep, reflector all one piece, so no individual adjustment. And the way the pivots are set, any left/right adjustment has more effect on the dipped beam than the main.
