Hi anyone had their F800GS or F650GS twin headlight scorch using aftermarket bulbs? cos mine is slightly scorch on the manifold but it not tat bad as compare to some of my pals Beemers. below are mine with Phillips Diamond Vision bulb.

Haven't noticed any on mine, using brighter but same wattage bulbs. Always going to run the risk on a plastic lens if you fit a higher wattage bulb...

mine is the 55watt 12v phillips diamond vision same as the original one but it stated on the bulb not for use in Europe n USA. tat why is got burnt i guess.

On my previous 800gs I checked the reflector as HID's were being fitted and it was already burnt from the OEM bulb at around 10k miles. I should really have taken a picture in case it was blamed on the HID but never had any comeback after re-fitting normal bulb when I traded it in at 25k miles.

Probably should say it's only a 35watt HID on dipped beam only. Still going strong on my current bike after approx 30k miles.

Do they have MoT's in Singapore ? :nenau

I thought the UK was the only place with a compulsory yearly check.

no but in singapore we do have inspection of new vehicle after 3yrs and so on. and after 3yrs is yearly basic for inspection so as to obtain road tax n insurance to go on the road. money money.....:blagblah:blagblah:blagblah

Got the the 55watt HID kit form adventure bikes, fitted it about 12 months ago and noticed this morning that all the reflector is scorched black and lense has gone foggy :blast

The dish is so shallow and 55 often scorches

alternatively I have got the HID 35 waty Kit and recommended from Les Wassal and have no scorch and lens is not foggy :thumb2

also passed it's second MOT yesterday no fails :beerjug:

I dont miss the original yellow candle, I quite like the bright white star :D

Being a boring git, I was reading some archived Topics off other forums and apparently even the standard 55w bulb will eventually scorch the reflector.

Members of said forum put it down to the quality of the reflector.

As others have mentioned for the MOT it doesn't seem to get picked up.

I fitted HID's to my dipped beam and made sure they were 35 watts, still got an increase in light output but using less power.

MoT...

For a scorch mark to effect MoT it would have to impair the function of the headlamp. I think you'd be hard pressed to even notice such a mark with the headlamp illuminated...:nenau

One MoT issue may be beam throw - HIDs have a different 'filament' * shape to halogens. Has anyone had this tested by a garage other than the friendly local?

Best,

S

I had one on my Transalp for two years and it passed the MOT both times with no advisories.

Thank you. Think i'll go for a 35w 4300k HID now that the nights are getting longer.

:beerjug:

I would go for a 6000k as it is White light, the standard bulbs are 4500K yellow and the 8000k is Blue.

Mine is 35 W as mentioned from Les Wassall a fellow ukgser and HID guru

more with pictures and charts, HERE

here is a picture of mine and its not even dark :blast

note , white garage door, white kitchen rolls, orange indicators (on) hella micro DE 55 W white (on- also from les Wassall :D) HID 35w whiter than white, bright star (also on)

as for the K rating, pm Les :thumb

not just for night picked out clearly in daylight, much better that the standard yellow candle,

Yep my headlamp reflector is blackendand & blistered above the lamp  ie it has heat damaged/melted the reflector!! Bike has done 32,000miles, reflector started to go not long after the warrenty expired...funny that!

I have only ever used standard 55w H7 lamps!! :nenau

Motor Works have new headlamp unit for £260  I think

BMW attitude is....... oh dear its out of warrenty thats a shame we can supply and fit a new one.... (I didnt hear the £££££ talk that followed)

Anyone know of a crashed 800GS or scrapy that has a servicable headlight??

There's a chap on ADV who disassembled the unit, chrome sprayed the inside and sealed back up. I reckon high temp spray and sikaflex would be maybe £15 - £20. Unless there's a source of high temp chrome brush-on paint in which case you wouldn't have to take it all apart but you would have to be very patient!
