Hi,

the steering on my 800GS has become very light almost dropping into corners before I touch the bars.

I have booked the bike into my BMW dealer this Friday for them to take a look, has anyone had this experience?

My bike is just coming up to 10,000 miles and fitted with Metzler Tourance tyres

many thanks

Tim

How many miles have you done on the current tyres? It sounds a bit like tyres with quite a lot of miles on them that have squared off so when you go to corner it feels likes your falling into the corner (transition between squared off and rounded edges).

Headrace bearings are the simplest things to tighten on this bike. Whip it up on the centre stand, weight the back so the front is off the ground and see how they feel going lock to lock. The grab hold of the wheel and rock back and forth - there should be no play.

The official setup is to tighten them to 30Nm, go lock to lock three times, then back off 60 degrees before retightening to 10Nm.

Yes Tim, its your head-stock bearings. Exactly the same scenario, where your heeled over into a corner & the front lurches forward a tiny bit. One of those quick glaces at the bike, wtf was that!

They will then need to be re-tightened around 400 miles later. :hide

Mine lasted 19k, my rear bearings have now gone so that's been done before my next years insurance @weekend! (21k).
