Heated Grips - Cooling

Appologies if this has been discussed before.. but I've noticed that the heated grips on my 07GSA start off nice and warm then after about 30mins they seem to cool down, to the extent that when I take my gloves off they only feel slightly warm on #1 setting. Had them checked by Alan Jefferies when the front disc's were being replaced and they say they are ok.
This might sound like a daft question but are the Heated grips set to a specfic temp to run at or does it depend on the exernal temp to how hot they get.
The only reason I'm asking is that the warrenty runs out at the end of this month and if they are on their way out I need to get them replaced, or if its normal for the grips.

I had the same problem on my old 1150, never sorted it out. Both my 1200s were very hot to the touch as are my current ones on the Pan ( Honda) and VFR( Oxford).

Sounds like yours may be faulty.

I feel that mine work on a heat up cool down cycle. I've ridden other GS1200's that do the same so I wouldn't describe it as being faulty

I think yours sound 'normal'

The first setting isn't that hot but obviously over time it heats your hand to the extent that now your hand has warmed the grip feels only slightly warmish

I bet you'd notice the warmth on that setting if you place your bare cold hand on it on a winters day!

Must admit I thought that too if it was freezing.... anything would seem warm to the touch... thats why I wondered if the temp setting was related to the outside temp.. but from what people say they just 'pulse' on/off

I dunno if the GS has heated grips that are any different from most but typically they are just a coil of thin wire that work off the full 12 volts of the bike. Only their resistence and the rate they lose heat controls how hot they get. The two heat settings result from the switch connecting them either in series (warm) and parallel (hot).

When you've been on the bike a while and got cold from riding your hands are also colder than when you first started. A combination of wind blast and your hands themselves remove heat from the grips and as a result the grips get cooler.
