Heated Grips.... left/right variation?

Might just be me, but has anyone had a issue with the left heated grip being cooler than the right..... Level 3 on my bike through a mid season leather goretex gloves the right side appears very hot, the left seems hot.... just not as hot and less consistently across the grip.

Same here, I asked my dealer when I first got the bike, he said they are just like that

The only thing I can think of is that the left hand side looses more heat into the bar as it’s directly in contact with the aluminum bar whereas the right hand side sits on the plastic throttle tube
Of course it could be completely unrelated

You may find that manipulating the throttle makes you grip the right one more, thus making it appear warmer

When fitting aftermarket grips I always wrap some electrical insulation tape to the left side before installing. It does help.

I've checked the oem grips on 5 BMW's I have owned with a infra red thermometer and the left grip is always cooler than the right (that is at standstill in the garage and not travelling at speed in low temps) , assume heat loss would be greater in those circumstances .

The grip that is directly on to the the steel or alloy bars ( a heat sink ) always emits less heat , the plastic throttle tube acts as an insulator .

Always wondered what would happen if you could get hold of two heated grips intended for the throttle side and mount one on the left side with a plastic insulator between it and the bars , reckon the left grip would be hotter

I was told by the service manager that the right grip was cooler due to the throttle tube. BMW could have compensated for this in the manufacture.

Thanks guys, really helpful and yes the handlebar/heat sink theory is very plausible, much appreciated.

It's really not a big "issue" but it's good to know I'm not alone.

I finally rode a 1300 on demo just over a week ago, noticed the variation in heat between the 2 sides but not overly bothered by it. The different bar internals and conductivity performance sounds logical but the 1250 doesn't seem to have the same variation-that I've noticed- so you wonder how the 1300 setup made it through design and testing and into production?

BMW should get Oxford products to build their heated grips never had this issue with one grip cooler than the other with my present or previous heated grips

Heated Grips on 1100/1150 GS are thermo nuclear
Have to turn them down and that’s with steel bars not alloy

they've always been like it all the way back to the first 1200GS - I got the 2009 throttle assembly so the throttle cable doesn't obstruct the brake lever like the earlier design and the variation was reduced... but I think my K13 and K1600 was the same

thinking about it likely some overly complex, pointless design feature (that's doesn't work), that they spent 13 billion working on. To better heat the right hand grip as some deep state algorithm (that was 7.5 billion of the development costs of destroying ukraine attacking rissua) calculated - by operating the grip and operating the brake for longer than the clutch - you're are in contact with it 25% less often

I've had a number of bikes with heated grips, the first r1150gs, r1200gsa tc, r1200gsa lc x2 and an r1250gsa lc all had medoicre to average grips.
The ktm 1090 heated grips were superb and of the 5 or 6 bikes I fitted aftermarket Oxford grips to inc my current r1150gs have been excellent.
TDM 900 initially had aftermarket ones (not Oxford) and the hottest thing about them were the lights on the control module.
When I tried the Stelvio demonstrator the factory grips were worse than BMW ones but the bike I bought has the newer style Oxford ones fitted which are very good

Never noticed on my 1300…. Will think about it the next time I ride it in the cold and have to put the heated grips on.

I’ve just fitted Acewell heated grips to my old R80GS basic, and they seem to be the same heat each side…. Five different hear settings, and the highest heat is too hot for me at current temperatures.
Acewell grips fitted after Mikeyboy gave them the thumbs up….. and I trust his judgement.
